wheel crooked after battery disconnect

I recently had my steering wheel off, i had to kill the power with the wheel turned, when i reconnected the battery, i get the esp warning, plus the wheel is not postioned at 1'oclock, when the wheels are straight, i tried setting the wheel straight then disconnecting battery again but its still off, i know it cant be cause i put the wheel on cocked cause of the keyways, no way to put it on but one way... perhaps i will try, tires straight and disconnect, see what happens...any help appreciated

Thanks for your reply Morten...
I tried that but it is not going back to center...

here is how i am attempting to do it

Turn car ignition on, while in park, turn the wheel left till stop, turn the wheel right to stop, then turn it back to the middle, let it idle for a few minutes then drive... after going very short distance i throw the ESP malfunction...

do i need to put the car in drive and do this?

do i need to stop at left stop for extended time? and right?

when they say center, center the steering wheel, or center of the tires, as per now they are two different points.?

should i turn the car of immediately after centering it ?

thanks

Nevermind, I am a knucklehead, i thought the steering shaft only had one way on, not true... I put the wheel on crooked... repositioned this morning, all is right now...
