Rest mode

I noticed that my 08 e350 automatically turns on rest mode while I was in the car for a while taking a nap. If I lock the car will rest mode still activate? Is there a way to deactivate it?

I have never seen it come on by itself. All the MB's that I have with rest must be activated after shutting the car off.

Did you and the wife have a "disagreement"?

Seriously, My E320 had that feature that had to be activated by pressing a button. In the winter it would continue to blow warm air for about 10 minutes after the car was shut off. The design is to keep the car comfortable while runing errands.

I have an 07 E350 and as far as I know it does not have that feature, or maybe I don't know how it works.

lol...nope I was at work, I was in the car for around 3 hours and it came on twice for 30 minutes each time, I was afraid that if it does this all the time the battery would drain fast It made that weird fax machine sound then it came on.

In US cars they discontinued this feature in mid 2005. And I have never known it to come on automatically. Interesting issue.

Does a "REST" indicator appear in the LED display?

What exactly does the "rest mode" include?
It runs an electric water pump in the engine compartment to circulate the engine's coolant through the heater core, and also runs the heater blower for up to 30 minutes (or until a low battery condition is detected). It is used when you expect to return to the car within a few minutes, and is designed to keep the car interior warm in cold climates. It is activated by pressing the REST button on the climate control system and an indicator comes on and can only be activated when the Smartkey is in position 1 (accessories) or 0 (off).

Yeah rest does appear on the LED display...The funny thing is there is no rest button and my key is still in my pocket and I don't have keyless-go

Not sure if this applies to your model but MB has now added a feature that turns on the blower motor for a few minutes after the vehicle is turned off to dry out the heater box to eliminate the smell upon start up. Prevent mold from growing in the heater box.

It can be activated with the key out of the ignition (the normal way it is operated). Not sure why it would come on without the button; especially on a car that is not supposed to have (that I am aware of) that feature. I would keep an eye on it as it does not sound normal and it could indeed drain your battery.

Have you looked in the manual to see if it is mentioned in there?

i havent checked the manual yet but I don't remember seeing it ...I wonder how the dealer is gonna handle this I should wait until the battery is low

My '07 Owners Manual shows a Rest Button only on Canadian cars' HVAC controls. USA cars don't have it... but he says he doesn't press anything.

well what do you know I went to check my car in the garage right now and rest was on I was gonna take a picture but my windows are tinted. I opened the door and rest mode was no more . I'm gonna leave my windows down and take a pic in an hour

That's news to me. I notice you have the driver temp control on hot. Has it been on hot in all cases when REST came on? Perhaps this is an undocumented feature...

I had the temp on cold and it still came on...the temp really isn't hot at all its just like having a fan on. The times that I noticed rest come on is when the car isn't locked but now im gonna lock it and see if it still comes on.

Damn, I thought they took that thing out just like with the thumbwheel and charcoal for V8s. I love it. Actually, it works when it's hot too, it blows cold air for a good 10 minutes then gets luke warm.

Damn, now that I think about it, they took a lot out in 05 MYs. I remember now with all the research I did before buying my E.

Not so, I use it when I leave my dog in the car while I am running an errand. It has been decontented in US cars though along with some other very nice features. I have it in my 06 ML500 but not my 05 E.It does not run down the battery and will blow hot/warm air for about 15 minutes, until the heater core and coolant cool down.

it's pretty good if you live in colder climates but in socal not so, there is no way to turn mine off though

If the evaporator is still cool it will blow some cool air out for a few minutes but not for long. It will mainly circulate some air to keep it from getting to hot but I don't see it being to effective in warm conditions because it wouldn't take long to warm up the evaporator.

The years the solar panels were offered were perhaps effective as that ran for extended periods to keep the air moving inside the car.

Ya, but I heard the solar panels would drain the battery. I love the REST function it's great in the winter when running out quickly to do something.

What's the thumbwheel?

What I don't understand is how OP's car has a "Rest" Feature when that was supposed to be discontinued after '04 from what I'd thought? Unless it's a Canada car or something.

I agree. If anything it makes the a/c system more confusing as you can have warm air blowing from the sides and the two middle ones will be cold. I don't get what the point of it is for. But the REST feature, they should've left it in.
