HELP
help...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just bought a 2006 E350 AWD. It has relatively new tires and the car has 41,000 miles.
I took it ot my friendly independent service guy to check a varible thumping noise when it drives. It is pronounced at low speeds and at certain higher speeds but it seems like it is not always there.
He took a look and a drive and said all four tires were chopping, that is uneven wear usually caused by the sespension. But he siad the car did not have enough miles on it to suspect the struts and shocks.\
Any ideas what I should do?

Thanks for the note. I am a very un-sofisticated buyer of cars. All I looked at was that the tires looked new. They are in fact Cooper tires of which I know nothing, expect that I never see them mentioned anywhere.
I will replace them with Michlen after a little while longer.

Maybe the car needs a 4-wheel alignment, which I believe is not covered under warranty. If that does not fix the problem, you should bring it to the dealer before the warranty expires.

The OEM Michelin Tires are an excellent choice. Long lasting, decent handling, and comfortable. (Also not cheap which is why the previous owner threw on a set of Coopers to turn the car in with.) Check Tirerack.com for proper fitment & price, or check Michelin's US site.
Many MB dealers have competitive prices on these tires, but some are not fairly priced. By all means, have the car aligned & all wheels balanced at the time of installation. I personally don't let tire shops work on my wheels/tires if I can avoid it. They will over tighten the wheel bolts, which will cause brake problems shortly afterwards. I bring the car to the MB dealer.
My car requires so little service that when it does, I don't mind having the MB service department do it. Make sure you choose a service advisor that listens to you, and knows the car. Some of them are car guys, and some of them aren't even good enough to work at a Starbucks.
Enjoy your car!
