Look closer - parts of the back have tape over them. I think the new 5 series behind actually looks similar to 7's, with light bar across its trunk. Not too bad. Matter of personal taste of course.

Here are some other various links to pictures of the new 5 series giving a very good indication of the interior and exterior.

As stated,I don't think Benz has anything to worry about!!

Just confirms that I made the right choice picking my E over the 5, IMHO!

its interesting-
When the new MB's came out I didnt like the tail-and tailights-
Now i love them...
( i have an e500 sport obsid blk)

When the new BMW 7's came out thought they were horrendous.
Now I see them them and think they are quite nice-
done correctly-borders on HOT...

stilll does not compare to the E's but they grow on you.

Actually I was going to buy the CLK 500- saw the E500 in silver on the floorr and said "ok what is THAT"!

I guess BMW is hoping that Z4-like front end treatment is going to grow on us.

I don't think so.

The back of the car just looks terrible.

I hated the 7 series from the moment I saw it and over time have grown to hate it even more. This car will be no better.

Someone should "flame surface" Chris Bangle's rear end!!!

I like the new 5 series, I'm interested in seeing the finished interior, instead of with wires hanging out everywhere.

I agree that it is a matter of opinion. That said, IMHO, it is really too bad that the Lexus and BMW designers have taken a really good distinctive (other than the S Class knockoff Lexus LS430) design for the different models from years past and screwed them up so badly. Examples: the old BMW 7s, 5s and Zs versus the new; the old Lexus ES300s versus the new; the old Lexus GS300 and GS430 versus what the sneak peeks of the new look lke. Perhaps if Lexus would stop trying to knock off the S Class with the LS430 they could come up with something that doesn't look like a battleship. They seem to think weird is in. Maybe it is, but not for me.

5 Series

A year ago I actually wanted the new 5-Series to come out in time so that I could do some serious shopping between the E500 and a 540. When their (BMW) release and production dates started slipping I gave up waiting.

I also fell totally in love with the E500 at first sight.

Now that I've seen several spy shots - exterior and interior, I'm so glad that I did not postpone my E500 purchase. I think the new 5-Series is significantly inferior asthetically. The interior pics are disgusting.

That said, whether we choose to readily admit it or not, it will probably be a great drive.

You're forgetting something

You are forgetting something!!! BMWS are half the price!!! In fact, its their main asset against Mercedes...their price!!! You think if BMWs were the same price as Mercedes people would still buy BMWs?

Where I live BMW's are similiarly priced to Benz's.
Not enought price difference to justify buying the 5 series because it's cheaper that's for sure.

Depends on what cars you are comparing. E320 is comparable to 530, E500 to 540, E55 to M5. I researched the subject well before I bought my E320 and price difference was about 10-15%, not 50%! Half the price of E320 will not buy you even a basic 325.
