Panorama roof ceaking noise

Dear All,

I have E500 MY05 with panorama sliding roof. I really sick and tired with the creaking noise coming from the back of the roof - at least I hear it comes from the back, but not sure.

Does anybody have a positive experience of having the trouble fixed? What is the cause of this and may it is possible to fix without having the dealership involved, i.e. by myself?

Thanx to all!

I'm sick of it too on a 2007. I make it a habit to open or tilt the sun roof to get rid of it.

I also find creaking from the rear seats, not sure whether it's the seat back or the seat cushion casuing it.

But why don’t you deliver the car to the dealership? I am sure it should be covered by the warranty. If I were you I would definitely do so!

By the way, just wanted to share my impression on the features in the E-class produced for US market. The point that I am from Russia and purchased E500 from NY, USA. The car has the panorama, but does not have heated seats (at least in the front) - I would suppose that NY is not a CA and the heated seats are really needed instead of the glass roof, even if this a matter of costs... Moreover, E500 is quite expensive stuff and I was surprised that there is no parking distance control system... Quite strange...

I considered the purchase from Germany - there are very few E500 which have not equipped by the above options... The weather conditions and troubles with parking are the same in NY and in Europe I suppose

I can't imagine a NY car not having heated front seats. (Maybe the car was originally purchased in a warmer state & brought into NY as a new car??) In the US we can only get heated front seats... no rear heated seats. Park assist is an $1100. option here... quite alot of money for that option. The car should come with it, anyway. If there is an option I would pass over in order to get something else on the car, that would be the one.

Enjoy the car!

When I took mine in they lubricated the rails or something under warranty. My CPO warranty though does not cover this. The noise came back about a month later. My friends dad's SL55 was horrendous in regards to the noise of the pano roof.

From a Konigstiger post a couple of years ago :

"MBUSA DTB P-B-77.20/36a MAY06 Panorama roof noise and abnormal operation, recommends the dealer refer to the Netstar troubleshooting guide. Lubricants and noise damping materials are available individually or in the Noise Damping Service Kit part # A0005800350."

Thanks a lot. But do you know what should be done under this service bulletin? The problem is that I do not trust to our local dealerships - they usually poropose to replace a half of the car and extend the money, even when the problem is a peanut. Therefore, I try the know the solution and then propose the way on how to proceed

PM Konigstiger and ask him to please send you a copy...he is one of the most helpful people on this forum.

Or, do what many people do and purchase the special lube from the MB parts dept (or online*) and lube the rails yourself and maybe that will solve your "creak". BTW, as Barry always reminds-use sparingly as you don't want the lube attracting dirt/debris, etc. Good luck !

Edit : *Lube is called Gleitpaste and comes in 500g cans @ the dealer.(expensive)
You can call Rusty @ buymbparts.com and order a 1 oz bottle for far less. (800)-741-5252

Repair is covered at no cost for 1 year by dealer, bring it back and mention P-B-77.20/36a. If steadfast on DIY (not advised) PM your email address and I will forward instructions to clean, lubricate, adjust, and if needed replace seals.

A quick update on the status Just went back from the dealership - the light version of diagnostic was in vain - nothing was heard and seen. Next week going to deliver the car for the in-depth diagnostic - the roof and ceiling will be completely disassembled. Let's see what happened

well good thing that its been documented in the system for creaky pano roof and in the paperwork given to you. So if it does fail in the future when you are out of warranty, it should be fixed with goodwill, since their is documentation of the problem while under warranty.

I guess i got lucky with mine, i have heated/cooling seats. Really have been using the cooling part since its in the mid 90s here last few weeks. Plus having a black car doesn't help much:-)

Lubricating the sliders and rails with the specific MB greases (there are two) will help alleviate the noise, but it will come back and it will never be entirely gone.

This is why we did not get another pano roof on our W211.

People who like the pano roof should be aware of this issue. It's not a quality control issue, it's just the nature of the beast. You put two big pieces of glass on the roof of any car, and you are going to get some noise if the chassis flexes ever so slightly. BMWs with pano roofs, and the BMW wagons with the dual sliding roofs have the same issue.

In my case the noise comes from the rear part of the roof, thereofre it looks like lubricating will not help. I concerned about the seal which lies between the body and the glass.

But in general I would say that I am really disappointed - this car in Russia costs about $100K and I could not imagine that the engeneering would be so poor. I would likely cancel this option from the list than produce the car with such a defect.

After your statement that the noise likely will not gone, I am uncertain to pay for 5,5 hours, which is almost $600 for in-depth diagnostic.

I've noticed this as well and will likely not have another Pano roof on the next car if it's a W212 E or W221 S.

I may also consider the GL, and it has a panoramic sunroof in the rear - hopefully it won't suffer the same fate given its larger roof area and smaller glass area.

Had lots of problems with pano creaking sounds. The car went back and forth to the dealership before it was finally fixed with a seal replacement about a year ago after the twelfth or so visit. They also found some debris in one of the tracks. Last week, the roof became inoperational. Took it back in and had the motor and rail assembly replaced. The $3,500 job was covered under my Chrysler Service Contract.

As promised going to update all on the progress.

VIVA!!! I HAVE IT FIXED!

I delivered the car to dealership on Wendesday and left there for 2 days. They identified that the ceacking came from the alignment between the body and roof frame. As I was told the frame is screwed to the body by bolts and the latest faded. They screwed them to the end, lubricated seals. Now the rood is quiet

They took 8 hours for the work, which is much, but I see the result
