Radio stuck in mute mode.

Hi all,
I am new here. Just got my 06 E350 2 weeks ago. I love it. I am having a problem however. The radio is stuck in mute mode. The icon is in the display and no sound out of system. All other functions work fine. I have taken out the fuse in hopes of a reset but that did not work. Any ideas?

thanks, Dennis

Did you try to reset the device that mutes the radio? Like a phone kit or Tele-Aid? It could be a bad phone controller, do you have the OEM phone kit?

no phone, no sat, no nav. It worked when I drove to the beach and not when I got back in to go home. I also noticed the fan in the trunk on the amp is staying on. I pull the fuse for the audio gateway and reinsert it and it stops until I turn the system on again. It seems odd the mute indicator is on in the display. That leads me to believe the problem is in the head unit.

Just a stupid question... Have you tried to turn the volume up a couple of turns on the Head unit and NOT the steering wheel button?

yes I have tried that. The mute icon on the radio stays on no matter what I do. If the cd changer is on the time elapsed number show that it is playing. When I push the mute button the counter stops like it should and when I push it again it starts counting again. That damn mute icon just sits there starring at me.

If its an 05 E350 it might still be under factory warranty or just recently ran out in which case the dealer might fix it as a goodwill gesture?

Just a thought.

Remove both fuse #28 (15A) located in driver’s side interior panel and #6 for AGW in rear SAM simultaneously, wait a minute or two, then reinstall hopefully reset will occur. If successful, I would suggest you also update the COMAND headunit software for increased reliability. If not successful, you may need to replace AGW and/or headunit. If this is the case, as suggested warranty covers repair or if recently expired, MBUSA may allow for goodwill repair.

COMAND headunit software update is covered by warranty by mentioning DTB P-B-82.60/382b or if warranty is expired: DIY – PM your email address and I will forward a copy listing service disc to purchase and install instructions. BTW, although not applicable to your vehicle at this time update adds navigation ETA & phone signal strength and navigation voice mutes with MUTE button if you were to install later. Include VIN if you want a copy of your vehicle’s MB datacard listing equipment, codes, initial delivery date, etc.

Thank you konigstiger. I have also done that and it did not work. I am 5000 miles out of warranty. Hopefully they will take care of me anyway. Thanks everyone for your help.

But I thought all US W211 cars have Tele-Aid?

I don't know if the AGW blower is supposed to run all the time or not but on a car with an AGW the mute wire goes to the AGW and the muted status is just transmitted to the head unit, the head unit cannot mute audio on its own (excluding a stuck mute button or something like that).

Did you try removing the mute wire from the AGW? Or measure the voltage. If it is down, figure out which device is pulling it. If it still mutes when the wire is disconnected, the AGW must be faulty.

Hi all,
So I went on another forum and a guy had the same prob. Turns out if your battery is low on voltage it will put the radio in mute mode. I never saw the warning of low voltage until this morning. Bought a new battery and all is well. Interesting. Thanks for all the input.

Interesting, Telematics is incorporated into stage 2 shutoff normally associated with a warning message.

Hi Dennis and All!

I have an '05 E320 CDI that I recently purchased and I have the same stuck mute problem. Which battery did you change the main system or the aux battery? Or both? Do you know if the main battery is serviceable, as in able to top up with distilled water? Also do mind telling me how much $ you spent on the battery? I just don't want to get hosed up here in Canada.

I replaced the main battery. I bought it at wal-mart. I think it was about $80. I don't know about servicing the batt. I tested my original and it was beyond help. Everything has worked fine since. Hope that helped.
