So does this stuff offer UV protection and is that what protects the trim or is the discoloration a result of oxidation and this stuff protects the trim from getting in contact with the air?

For the record, the vinyl that I originally mentioned, is like a tape, eg. vinyl graphics used on cars...not a spray on thing.

I removed my trim and painted it with SEM trim paint, specifically designed for automotive trim. It has a nice low-gloss black finish, and has not peeled or scratched after 2 years. I also masked and painted the vertical trim strip on the rear door windows. This paint features maximum adhesion on all trim without the need for a primer. Check it out: http://sem.ws/Catalog.asp?prod=133

That Don Ngyuen guy on here will do the window trim flat black for me, using a vinyl wrap. That's what I mean. Otherwise, I don't see why the plasti-dip would be a bad idea, I might do that first. Cans are cheap at home depot.

Does anyone know if the black exterior window trim is aluminum or? and is it painted or anodized? I have the stained / tarnished problem with my R350 and looking for a way to fix this.

it's an anodized finish I believe...so aluminum. I had Don Nguyen vinyl wrap it when he made a visit up to NorCal to do some work. He wrapped the trim for my E500 effortlessly in about 20 min. Shouldn't be too difficult to find a place that does vinyl graphic wrapping in your area. Use a black glossy vinyl as it matches the factory gloss black trim.

Atleast stays glossy i guess, on BMW's all the trims go grey and look horrible!

Put a liquid wax like Turtle or Maguiars rub & buff it... no more purple cast.
