Automatic trunk lid closer????

Pages 96-97 of the Owner's Manual talk about the optional automatic trunk lid opening/closing system where you push a button and the trunk closes automatically. I would really like to have this feature! I don't recall ever seeing this mentioned as an option on the car. Am I missing something somewhere?

It is not a standard feature.

Contrary to some well read guests, rest assured that this feature is only available as an option.

I'm not sure if you can have it retrofitted, but if it was installed, you would find a button where you may now find a finger pull depression inside the trunklid.

We have the auto trunk and it's great. If you have your hands full just hit the trunk button on the key and it automatically opens the lid all the way so you just set your things in the trunk. The price was $475

I heard back from my dealer today, and the automatic trunk lid closer is a factory-installed item, period! Shucks!!! For anyone just ordering their car, you might want to consider this. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere or I'd have it!

Trunk closer

I think the trunk closer as well as the split rear seats must be a limited production thing. I noticed that is was available for a short time and now does not show as an option.

PS I seem to recall you asking about 17 in sport wheels. If not disregard this hyperlink.

I found this while surfing.

Thanks for the link, tmangus. Sounds like a good deal. But now that I have my stock 16" wheels with Michelins, I'm very happy. If I could have had H-rated Michelins on the 17" wheels, I would have gone for that. I seem to be as stuck on Michelins as I am on Mercedes. Guess I'm loyal to brands that have served me extremely well in the past!

Worth It?

I'm in the midst of the ordering process. What is the practical use for this feature? Doesn't the trunk pop completely open from the key anyway? Are there instances when you need to close the trunk remotely from inside the car?

Thanks for the info from seasoned owners whether this is worth it or not.

With the automatic trunk closer, you can select (as a default) whether the trunk opens completely or only a little bit. That should make it worth it to anyone who has a low roof over his regular parking spot, lower than 6 feet.

There is also a selection of "close" or "close/lock" if you have keyless-go. With keyless-go, the close/lock function is great because the trunk can be closed and the whole car locked with one button press.

Some people may have need to close the trunk from inside the car; but I have never encountered the need. Everytime I've used the closing feature from inside the car, I could have easily gotten out and closed the trunk.

This is a pretty limited use but here in the DC area, ever since 9/11, when driving on to government facilities the gate guards often want to inspect the trunk. The auto open and close makes it a lot easier.

It also prevents handprint smears on the paint when closing since you simply push the little button to close.

If you don't have the automatic trunk closer, you are supposed to use the closing handle (on the INSIDE of the trunk, not the ledge on the outside). That prevents smears, and even worse, scratches! Unless of course other people close the trunk... sigh.

Like the gate guards . . . even when you tell them "I'll close it from inside."

Dammit! now I have to go outside & look for the inside closer handle thing!

BTW, MB offers a chrome handle/lip that mounts to a chrome license plate frame thru the bottom holes in the plate/frame.

And somebody please tell my wife not to put her mitts (with the engagement/wedding rings on the top corner of the trunk lid & slam without ever removing her hands from the lid!

Yes, The trunk lid opens from the key fob and from a button on the inside drivers door..... Save your $$$ and buy the rear sun shade or something more useful. The automatic trunk close is a novelty at best. Besides, if you suffer from OCD like me then you'll probably get out to make sure it really closed anyway....

Yep, I did that a few times until I developed confidence in it. The OCD also had me pulling on a door handle to make sure they really locked. Of course, with Keyless Go, all I did was unlock all the doors again. It took a while to break that habit also.

help with electronic trunk opener

My electronic trunk closer suddenly stopped working. The red light is on but when you push it, it does nothing. The closer and opener inside the car works but the one inside the trunk doesn’t. I have to physically close it which I hope doesn't cause further problems. Any ideas? Thanks...

In regards to using it, I am constantly getting stuff out of my trunk and it is great to hit the button and the whole car is locked.
