rattling noise

2003 e320 with 20 inch verde madonna wheels eibach springs HID's E63 bumper 2008 taillights
rattling noise
so i have been getting this noise from the middle of my car that sounds like a glass bottle being rolled on top of cement. so i take my car to the mechanic and he puts the car on the lift and takes a hammer bangs on the convertors gently and there the noise is along with the pain when he tells me $2700 to change both left and right convertors. Has anyone else had this problem and what did it cost. Also does the e55 exhaust bolt right on to the e320 convertors or do u have to do some modifying my mechanic says it wont work.

MBUSA released Service Campaign 2008010001 determining that the inner funnel material of the catalytic converter (CC) may warp which may lead to noise complaints for 2004 & 2005 models 203, 209, 211, 215 and 230.Your vehicle is not within model year however, this document “may” serve as basis for approaching MB (not dealer) for a goodwill repair or at the very least goodwill assistance to lower replacement cost through MB dealer if you want a copy, PM your email address.
