I am new but what I've heard is:
1) 2007-2009 is the refresh so there are likely to be some improvements
2) Air suspension can be problematic and will be expensive to fix

As for miles, who knows...

Later models are definitely more reliable. Stay away from '03-early '04. The fundamentals of the car should last a long time, with the majority of reported problems having to do with the electronics.

Our '05 cdi has been damn near bulletproof for over 100k miles, with the only unscheduled repairs to date being 2 SRS airbag sensors, 1 EGR, and one keyless-go door handle. I'll let you know how it's holding up when we get to 200k...

Stay away from '03-'04 MY's if I were you. '05's picked up quality as a whole, and your best bet is with an '06-'09.

I agree with the other guys, as the W211 matured they got better. I have an '03 E320 and have been very fortunate to not any problems except one ball joint and the I/R sensor in the left front door. I do advise buying a comprehensive extended warranty for any car not still under MB warranty as the repairs can be expensive.

My 03 E500 was my first MB and my last based on reliability alone. Don't know if I can trust them with $65G's on a "trust me it will be better".

It will now go back to the shop because of the infamous no dipstick and a malfunction telling me I have too much oil. Interesting since I drove it 3 months after service with OK showing. Guess it is making oil and perhaps I should take some out and sell it at $71/bbl.
