Gas cap loose, Service engine light

Hi I have a 2004 E500 4matic Sport. I was just at the dealer because my front passenger side airmatic shock failed and the loose gas cap warning, service engine light was on. I just purchased this car about a month ago, luckily it has the extended warranty so everything was covered. The service advisor said that they checked the gas cap and it was fine. The code for the service engine was P2013...major leak in the purge system. They say that they performed a fuel tank leak test and it was ok. He then said that it was a software problem and it was taken care of. Guess what, still have the same problem! Any ideas what it could be? I figured it would be a good idea to make a couple of suggestions to him when I bring it back. Thanks!!

The fuel tank is only one of the components in a car's EVAP system -- they should have checked out the entire system as a major leak (0.040" by OBD2 standards) can happen anywhere in the system (purge valve faulty, carbon cannister cracks, etc). EVAP problems have been called "technician's nightmares" as it takes a couple of hours to just troubleshoot the problem which includes testing all the components with the scan tool, applying pressure or vacuum to the system to confirm the leak, and then if there is a leak, smoke the system to find the leak, and finally fix the leak.

You'd be wasting your time trying to make suggestions to the SA as most of them don't know anything anyway. Just bring the car back and tell them that the problem still exists.

Regards,
paul...

Thanks for the info Paul,

I'm going to make an appointment to bring the car in this week, I'll make sure mention the points you made about the EVAP system anyway. Hopefully it points the tech in the right direction. I'll post the outcome when I get the car back.

Thanks again,
Scott

Brought the car in on Sat. and a vacuum test was performed, and found a purge valve faulty. So it was replaced and hopefully the problem has been solved. The whole thing took about two hours.
