SBC pump replacement! :)
So recently I had the following message come and go on my dash.
BRAKE, service brake visit workshop!
It has come and gone for the last month or so but the last week it has been on every time I started my car. I took the car to the dealer and they said my SBC pump needs to be replaced but its covered under warranty
So, I was wondering, what exactly do they replace? I know the pump is changed, do they also change my brake fluid? wires? etc? I know the pads and rotors wont be touched but is the caliper changed? Has anyone else that had this done noticed a change in their cars after the pump was replaced?
The car is a 2003 E320 with 80k miles. I have never had any problems with the brakes since we got the car....

This is a very common problem with pre 2005 W211s that were fitted with electronic brakes (SBC) to the extent that there was a major recall of affected vehicles in the UK. Essentailly when you press the pedal it connects electrically to the hydraulic brake servo rather than mechanically and hence braking pressure can be controlled. When it fails, there is some limited braking as a safety feature and you'll get that message on the dash.
They dropped SBC on the face lifted models because of the problems. The problem lies with the SBC control until which needs to be replaced at a cost of approx £1300GBP / 2000USD. I don't believe that anything else is replaced. I'm sure there's lots of info on this on the net. Lucky you had a warranty otherwise your garage/workshop and bank would have become good friends!

His car has 220,000 miles. I don't know of any warranty worth buying for a car with that many miles. Mercedes sent me a sicker to put in my owner's manual (the little pamphlet about the warranties). It fits perfectly on the inside of the last cover. It states that all SBC equipped cars have a 10-year unlimited mileage warranty on the system.
jbec.Keane, did your brakes still work correctly/normally when you got the red warning in dash? How many sets of front/rear pads have you replaced in 220,000 miles? I would guess that you probably replace all 4 corners every 80,000 miles or so. So are you on your 3rd set?

does anyone know if they change the brake fluid when they change the SBC pump? is anything other than the pump changed? I read somewhere that they also change the calipers, is that true?
Im wondering about the fluid because I have never changed it and it might be time to do it if they dont change it for free.

The message was not in red so I felt safe in driving the car. The brakes worked fine through it all. The only difference after the pump was replaced was that the pumping noise doesn't happen anywhere near as often. It used to happen at lease once every time I took the car out and sometimes more. Now, I don't think I've heard it at all.
You're about right on the brake pad mileage and I am on my third set of brakes. The only unusual repair as been two sets of ball joints and two sets of motor mounts.
I plan on keeping the car another year or two and then pick up a new one in Germany.

If the RED light came on and then went off it is not brake pads. I would highly RECOMMEND you get the car to the dealer for inspection. Failure of brakes is really not a good experience. Can you figure out how I know brake failure is unpleasant?
