E320 year 2004
Smile What is the normal operating Engine Temperature

Hi ,

I have 2004 E320, I just noticed the operating engine temperature runs between 85 to 100 degrees celcius, is basically runing hotter than my normal cars, I am sure sombody outhere ran to similar situation. What is the normal operating engine temperature for these type of cars? should I be concern or what? I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

I also have a 2004 E320. I don’t think that the 4-Matic makes any difference. But, my temperature gage was always over the half-way spot on the gage. It would be just at about 85 when I was driving fast on the highway (one notch lower than where it normally was). I now have 54k miles on it and it had always been a bit on what I consider the hot side. I just checked the PH and it had edged over 8, so I brought in distilled water and Supercool additive when I brought the car in to have the last service. They flushed the coolant and now the gage indicates much lower! It is just at the half-way point. Sometimes it makes it to 85, when I am in bumper-to-bumper traffic, in the heat and with the AC on. As soon as I roll again, the temperature drops right down. It is a good two notches bellow where it used to be.

I don’t think that there was a problem before, but I do like it better when my gage is not indicating over ½. I would recommend flushing the fluid every 5 years with distilled water anyway. I don’t know if this will affect fuel economy though. My service writer is surprised that this happened since these cars have an electronically controlled thermostat.
