Prep and Installation of Replacement Aux Bat

Thanks to other forum members, I purchased a Sears Die Hard Gold BS-14 AGM battery. This is an AGM battery. Price was $87.99. It comes with the sulphuric acid separate in an easy to install 6 funnel vial. You simply press the vial onto the recepticle and the sulphuric acid container is punctured and fills the 6 battery holes, so you know it is fresh, as opposed to purchasing another battery that has been filled months or years ago. You let it sit for a minimum of 30 minutes, close it and charge, not more than 2 amp rate. Normal charge should be finished in 2-4 hours. It should read NLT 12.7 volts when fullly charged. To install, you need a deepsocket 10mm socket.

1. Disconnect the negative lead on the trunk battery and cover it so it doesn't accidentally touch the negative terminal while you are working.

2. Remove the air filter housing by disconnecting the 10mm plastic nut and squeezing open the two plastic lips on each side in the back. Lift out.

3. Disconnect the negative lead on the aux battery.

4. Disconnect the hold down clamp with the 10mm deep socket.

5. Disconnect the positive lead and lift the battery out.

Install the new battery:

1. The Sears battery comes with two screws and two nuts. The original MB battery has threads on the terminals, the new one does not. Use the nuts that came with the new battery and carefully place the nut inside the terminal and the original MB bolts will catch the nuts and screw in perfectly. I was a little careful and used a magnetic probe to place the nuts, to prevent them falling and having to jack the car up and remove the soundproofing to find the nut.

2. Connect the positive lead, the hold down clamp and the negative lead.

3. Re-install the air filter housing

4. Re-connect the negative lead in the trunk.

Normalize settings: Turn ignition or engine on.

1. Clock-If you have your clock synced to your command unit, wait about 5 minutes and if your car can see the GPS satellite, it will automatically re-set the clock.

2. Windows- Hold the respective window in the up position for a couple of seconds after it closes and it will re-sync and automatically and go all the way up when you press it.

3. Sliding roof-Hold the roof in the full open and then the full close position again for a couple of seconds and it will be re-synced.

Procedure for my 05 E320 CDI

This doesn't sound right to me.

Reason to disconnect main negative lead:

First, it is the method approved in the MB manual. The reason is, that even if you disconnect the negative lead on the aux battery and accidentally touch ground or part of the car while touching the positive lead on the aux battery you will have a nice sparking event which can ruin components or the main battery.

Nice job JimBo!

I wish I'd seen the article a couple of weeks ago, I'd have tackled this myself.

Standard procedure in changing a battery for ANY car is to remove the negative wire first, as JimBo1mcm stated. I knew someone in my early college years who was burned when he removed the positive side first and his wrench touch the car's body. I huge set of sparks erupted igniting gas fumes. Luckily he was only singed, but his pride was burned pretty bad.

It worth the emphasis to say remove the negative side first.

I got one even better than that, I worked with a bozo that arc'ed the wrench through his gold wedding band------needless to say he now has a nice tatooed impression of the ring for life!!!!

Jimbo,

Thank you soooo very much for this post!. I saved myself over $300 by following this procedure! My E55 no longer has a blazing red light every time I turn it on!

Thank you again!!
