Need Rear Differential Replaced - Having Chest Pains!
I was told by the dealer today that I need my rear differential replaced on my E500 4matic. It is a 2006 with 70k. The dealer wants $2,750. Any thoughts on why this would fail? Would an independent repair shop be less expensive. If so, how do I find a good one in Michigan. Thanks in advance..

As a wannabe drag racer in my youth, I never owned a 1955 Chevrolet but I had a friend who did. 300+ h.p. and wide slicks on a differential designed for 160 would get them pretty quick. Armchair quarterbacking is dangerous but I would guess that it is an oil related failure. Seals leak, oil goes away and bearings fail. I hope you did not punish it the way we did. The 4 matic probably has clutches and other devices to handle torque assignment and differences in wheel rotation speed. 10 bolts and a taxi cab for a donor would fix the Chevy. Obviously not the case with M-B.
