ABS vacuum Pump ?
Hi guys
New member and all these problems. Sorry but have a few annoying issues, camber (prev post) and this abs pump.
Basically after about 3-4 depressions of the brake pedal when not moving, the abs unit starts vibrating. I assume that the abs unit is creating vacuum sufficient for the brakes to work and since the car is probably at low revs it is not enough for it. but is this normal ? it is really annoying and it pulses the brake pedal and is very audioable .... and you wouldnt expect it from an 02 e class thats for sure.
My main concern is that it is something that is causing this to happen and since it actuates the pump often it will wear out the pump quickly. I am startign to think it may be a cracked or broken vacuum line to the unit but have no idea where to look.
I did a quick search but didnt find this issue posted. Hopefully someone knows what i am on about

It should be more of a throbbing noise. I do not feel it in the pedal. There is an isolation kit that some have retrofitted. It is suppose to dampen the noise created by the small hydraulic pump that keeps the brake system under pressure. It was a 3-4 year experiment that brought lots of complaints, mainly because it can fail and leave the driver with no braking. Too many have reported 100% loss of braking during failure for this to be disputed. M-B has issued a 10 year blanket warranty to cover the pump . I think the problem began surfacing in European taxis. Probably not the companies finest hour. I have one on my vehicle so I can offer my condolances.

I can say the same. Course, I might feel differently if I rear ended a fuel truck because I had no brakes. Guess it is no worse than the Toyota deal where the car goes into WOT. Floor mats my a **

I WILL NOT ever buy another car with SBC brakes or Airmatic suspension.

"Failure" of SBC pump would be no different than driving a non SBC car that the enigne stalled and loses vacuum.....You still have unassisted hydrolic brakes......
Also failure is EXTREMELY rare (sorry it happened to you).
BTW, brake failure and "STOP NOW!" is kinda contradicting.....LOL

W211 E200 Kompressor
SBC superior performance
You may be interested to know that at least the "old" generation (ironic as it is more advanced i.m.o.) SBC has better performance than the breaks in the new (W212) E-class:
Break perfomance measured in seconds with stops from a speed of 100km/h (approx. 62 Mph) at 30 seconds intervals on a good bitumenised surface is:
W211 (model E 200 K - MY 2004) - best 2.72 seconds, worst 2.77 seconds and average of 10 stops = 2.75 seconds.
W212 (Model E 300 - MY 2010) - best 2.84 seconds, worst 3.13 seconds and average of 10 stops = 2.90 seconds.
Both vehicles tested with standard factory fitted tyres (for their respective MY). Source: Car Magazine Jul 2004 and Sept 2009 editions.
I certainly hope than W212 e-class does not drive behind me when I need to make an emergency stop!
