intermitent problem

Occasionally, my 2003 E500 will not respond if i romp the gas. After it does that, I have to power the car off to reset something so that it will even respond at all. No check engine light gets triggered either.

Thoughts?

James

When you say that it doesnt respond, does that mean that it has no power or the engine does not rev up at all?

MAF? In your case it may not help reading codes but Star could have some stored codes that do not trigger check engine light. Or does the engine die completely?

Gas pedal becomes inoperative. No throttle response whatsoever. Have to coast to the side and restart the car.

Engine does not die. Merely no throttle response.

I believe the W211 uses a "wire" throttle. It may be that an error code is stored somewhere.
I have often wondered how that system fails safe( ie does not go WOT under malfunction.) I have two cars with wire throttle and neither have given a minutes trouble and I cannot discern any difference in "feel" from the old mechanical system.
Since this system could cause a major mishap, I would assume it is foolproof but in your case, maybe not

Inspect sensor contacts (490 & 600 in diagram) behind pedal if fine have dealer, independent, or anyone with SDS check for stored fault code(s) may need to replace accelerator pedal part #2113000904 (for comparison shopping, parts.com $166.75) sensor could be malfunctioning.
