I'm not 100%, but I believe only the cars with 4 zone climate got the active charcoal filters.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

This. Though I can't say 100%. I can say, though, with confidence that E320 does not have charcoal filters

+1, at least that's how it is in US.

I think they took out the charcoal feature on the 05+ cars.

I have an '03 E320 and it does not have charcoal filters in the cabin. It has only the Combination filter in the engine compartment on the passenger side. A previous post stated the 4 zone climate control has them and I believe that is correct.

W211 E200 Kompressor
4-zone climatronic

Any E-class mo 2003-2009 has a charcoal filter provided the 4-zone climatronic is fitted. 4-Zone climatronic was standard in South Africa on all Elegance and Avantgarde models - even the 1,8 litre, E200 kompressor! What was MBUSA smoking when they added the 4-zone climatronic to the option list or larger engine derivatives only?

I'm asking b/c I put in the E500 Climate Control unit and would need to change settings to make it work properly. I know that by simply exchanging the unit I won't have a true 4-Zone at all and that is not my intention why I swapped the unit.

also with the 4 zone unit in the V8's, you get to have the driver and passenger side have different directions in which the air blows.

This is correct. An E320 can come with 4-zone AC, I've had a CDI with and another one without. A W211 without 4-zone would not have active charcoal filters, only a combo filter. Actually the 4-zone too at some point changed to combo filters only.
