wheel bearing

I have jsut been told that I have a right front wheel bearing going bad on my 2006 E350 AWD. My friednly tire guy took it for a test drive and pput it on the hoist and confirmed that the low level hum I heard is from a wheel bearing.

Can a regular foreign car mechanic fix this or do I have to take it to a dealer?Any idea what it might cost? will it just keep getting louder or might it freeze up? Thanks.

I have not changed my bearings yet. From what I have seen in the manual it is pretty much straight forward. Make sure that the replacement oil seal is a MB seal. The seal contains 4 magnets for the abs system. If you use aftermarket it won't contain the magnets. Ok,, the MB seal will be about $40 but pay it. The bearings are also straight forward. The only difference I really see is the pinch bolt on the bearing nut.

Best mechanic in central Jersey changed it for $325. Local dealer wanted $600 plus...

Fair price.

Bearing, seal, lube probably $80 or so rest labor. My brother paid $825 for a Toyota wheel bearing change.

The dealer will replace the entire hub assembly which is about $300. I'm guessing the rest of the charge was 2/3 hours labor and tax.
