What's the best engine oil and filter for E500, 2005?

Most of the 229.5 oils that MB approves are European mfg and either unavailable in the US or (probably) very expensive to import.
The Mobil Eurospec oil has a wider viscosity range than most.
I believe Shell Helix is another but only goes to 30 wt.
There are Amsoil believers out there as well.
I think it is odd that there is so much discussion and concern about oil for these cars.
As Americans we are used to a wide selection of products. It appears to chafe us that there is such a limited variety in this lubricant.
Personally, I think the easiest (and most cost effective) route is to source the Mobil oil from an auto parts dealer (some Walmarts) and buy the filters by mail. Liquids by mail are expensive due to weight. The Mann Evotop fleece filters fill the bill and are the ones that I can find in a number of mail order houses. I believe there are at least two other approved filter mfg but they are somewhat obscure. Course if you have to be different I am sure there is some way to import Fuch oil from the Netherlands.

I use royal purple, and in my experience it's always improved HP at the wheels and lasted 10,000+ miles before needing changing. And, If I buy it myself and bring it to the local jiffy lube, it's still cheaper than having them change it with what they charge for mobil 1
