E320 Crankcase Dipstick

I had the engine oil changed in my 2004 E320 this AM. I noticed that my shop was using a dip stick to check the oil level. I was advised that I could also get a dip stick for a $$$. Does anyone out there know where an owner can obtain one except directly through MB?

People have been buying the crankcase dipstick (and also the dipstick for the transmission) from either http://www.baumtools.com or http://www.asttool.com. Look for the dipstick for the 112 engine.

BTW, these dipsticks don't have a high/low indication like conventional dipsticks -- they're imprinted with a continuous scale. The OEM tool is part #120-589-07-21-00. If you buy the dipstick, your normal oil level should be at 170mm (car is on a flat surface).

Regards,
paul...

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that there was even a dipstick. It is where you would normally find the stick for the transmission. My shop mechanic has a chart that identifies what the level should be for my car. I want to think that he mentioned it to be in the 150+ range. Anyhow I'll get the correct number once I get a stick. This may sound like a stupid question but can it be left in all the time? Thanks again....

No, it cannot be left in all the time.

It's a shop tool.

It's too long to seal at the top.
