E500 sounds like diesel
I have recently purchased a 2003 E500 with about 70,000 miles. The car sounds like diesel when taking off and accelerating. It is a taping noise. have showed it to several MB shops and the dealer. They all recommended replacing the engine mounts,new engine oil, best graded gas.And I did and the noise did not go away. They also checked the cat. converter and it was fine. The engine does not shake, miss or work badly only the taping noise. A few days ago I went to the dealer and they said what I am hearing is the roller rockers and it is normal. I asked if the oil grade can change to a thicker higher viscocity oil and they rejected the idea. My question to E500 oweres is that if anyone has tried a thicker oil and if it has solved the taping problem. Please advise. Thanks in advance. The noise is taking the fun out of owning the E500.

I had similar issue. The noise was louder when I started the car in the morning. Royal Purple 5W-40 fixed the noise for me. I do oil change every 6500 miles. Keep in mind that Royal Purple is not MB approved oil but since I do not wait for 13k miles oil change. It runs fine on my E500. I've been using RP oil for almost 40k miles and engine runs smoother.
