E320 Brake Pad Recommendations

Could someone please recommend brake pads for the E320? Dealer wants an arm and a leg for them and I am thinking to go with affordable aftermarket pads. Thanks.

How much does the dealer want for OEM pads? I bought Porterfield and they were $120/set. The OEM pads tend to throw a lot of dust which is why people look for alternatives.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

dealer quoted $2000 Canadian for pads/rotor replacement. They requested to have the rotors replaced too without seeing their condition, from my understanding rotors only need to be replaced or resurfaced when required. Is it different for the E-class?

My 2005 E320 currently have 70,000kms (43 500 miles) on the odometer.

Thanks for your response.

The E320 has the SBC brake system. They brake pads should be replaced by someone who knows his job.
Sorry, I can not give you any recommendations for pads in the USA.

I still have the first pads on my car, now with 76.000 km

Thanks Consinus.
Just to confirm, the 2005 E320 should have brake pad depth sensors that will tell me via on-screen warnings to when it is time to replace the pads right? I have not seen such warning message but the dealer is saying that i should have them replaced.

Thanks.

Yes, the car tells you if the pads should be replaced.

But not all pads have these sensors or not all sensors are connected.
So it can happen that the inner or outer pad is fully worn and no message is displayed.

How many km do you have?

go to autohausaz.com to buy new pads. The rotors can easily last 2 sets of pads. The dealers always want to replace the rotors & the pads at the same time; that's their standard procedure I think. The minimum thickness requirement is stamped on the edge of the rotor. If you replaced the rotors last time, i'm sure you don't need to replace the rotors this time. Take your car to an indy shop -- cheaper labor.

I bought Jurid brake pads from Autohausaz. The first rear set (factory) burned into the sensors at 25,000 miles. Rotors (rear) were heavily scored. Car was under warranty and M-B dealer in Atlanta said" normal wear" no warranty replacement. I have about 48,000 on the car at present (factory rotors all around) and no wear indicators present front or back. The sensors part when the pads wear down to the sensor resting place. The disc grinds them into a "open" circuit or grounds out the circuit, not sure which, and a warning appears. So to answer your question, IF you do not damage them by allowing them to do their job, theoretically you could re- use them. They are delicate and easily damaged. They are very similar to the ignitors in toy Estes rocket engines.

Thanks for your response.
Rotors need to be replaced when the next pad wear will wear the rotors below the minimum specification limit. My rotors are at 95,000 and still within specs but are on the 3rd set of pads. IMO too many rotors are thrown out due to (need replacing) or (a little ridge on the edge and can't turn them). I don't turn them and have a new set in my shop but if the origional rotors are within spec worn with groves why throw away "good parts". However if they are worn to .040 of the min. spec AND you have to install new pads I would replace them. I found that MY driving (yours may vary) will give about .040 for 40,000 miles of driving and one set of pads.

Cost to replace pads.. About $85.00 for oem parts ordered from a forum vendor with sensors and about 3 hrs of my time. (I work slow )

2006 E-350
1 week ago , I replaced Rotors , Break pads , Spark plugs.
Rotor - Balo Front($74.00) and Rear ($36.00)
Pads - Akebono(Front)($72.00) , Centric (Rear $40.00)
Spark plugs-Bosch $9.00
Sensor-$6.00
Total $394.00 on racepages.com
It took 4hours.
If you have experienced on other car
it is almost the same job. Except removing the rotors (little tough job)
Also a very important thing is Remove the SBC cable.
This forum was very helpful.
If you want DIY check this forum...
Sorry no pics.
Good luck
I have 2006 e-350 base model 63000 miles

OEM brake pads from the parts department at the MB dealer was only $75. I believe they are about $55 at the online site above (which I have also bought, Pagid brand, which they describe as OE). I would recommend buying a set of new break wear sensors when you do them as they can break pretty easy and are like $6. (If you buy the parts at the dealer, they come with it.)

But I the rotors wouldn't be as inexpensive at the dealers. If you have to buy those I would suggest the autohouze site ~$75 a piece.

You can totally do the break job yourself. It is very similar as doing them to any other car. The only extra step you have to do is disconnect SBC during the install. There is a DIY sticky'ed I believe.

I will only use Mintex brake pads because of their great stopping power, and no dust and no squeel properties plus they are "rotors/discs friendly".
The dealers are very quick to replace the costly rotors. Use an accurate pair of measuring calipers to make sure replacement is indeed necessary. I routinely get much more than 100K miles on the rotors on my cars while I'm not trying to be easy on the brakes.

Just found out Parts.com will not process orders with Canadian credit card.
Does anyone know any suppliers that will accept Canadian credit card with Canadian billing address? I can have the parts shipped to a US location near the border but they still wouldn't accept credit cards with Canadian billing address.
Your help is very much appreciated.

Have you tried Porterfield brakes?

I JUST bought some race pads direct from the company.

And honestly all credit cards should be international; thats just bad customer service, if they really don't want the sales in this economy it is crazy!!!
