Stupid question: CDI oil filter

I've finally got off my rear and bought an oil extractor and plan to change my own oil.

My question is: i've never had a car with a cartridge type oil filter, so, do you need to prime the filter? Is there a specific torque it needs to be at? Or is it just screw off, dump out, put in, screw on hand tight?

Also, where the hell can I find a workshop manual (in the U.S)? I must be an idiot because I can't find it on the MB website.

TIA

Well that makes me look like a real fool doesn't it Thanks!

And Diesel Benz, how do I order from the website you linked to (and if you have the manual, does it work with Windows7 as it seems they have issues with vista)?

Can I post a follow-up "stupid" question that I have been meaning to ask for the past couple of weeks, but "Silly_Me" opened the door? When loosening the oil filter, does it make a mess of things or does the oil drain back into the engine? In other words, do you have to capture the oil?
Thanks,
Mike T.

I have mine working with WIndows7 using Microsoft "Virtual XP" mode. Which you can download from Microsoft. You can call MBUSA and order the DVD there.

Your question almost gets accepted to the list of silly questions even if none should exist. The point is the car is a Mercedes and it has a drain valve at the filter, once the cap moves up the valve opens and allows oil drain to the sump.

The idea is that you do not need to get dirty hands when changing the engine oil. This is almost impossible with just about any other car that I've worked with when they have the filter at the bottom of the engine even if it comes off downwards and the filter cap works as a cup. It just cannot hold all the oil from the filter housing.

Thank you Diesel Benz. I am sure that you are correct, but I will have to try it (when I do my first oil change) to see it, and believe it!.

I am sorry for high jacking this thread, but I have one more question. Our diesels hold something like 8.5 quarts of oil. So, assuming that the car may burn one quart of oil between oil changes and there is no oil dip stick, say you remove 7.5 quarts with the oil extractor, do you only put in 7.5 quarts of new oil, or do you go with what the book states?
Again, thank you for your responses!

Mike,
I just changed mine a few weeks ago. When removing the filter, its a good idea to have a rag and plastic shopping bag handy. If you change it warm (as recommended), you inevitably will have a soaked filter, and unless you are lightening fast, you will get some drips. I ended up putting 7.5 quarts in, and didnt get a low oil message, I also purchased the dipstick tool to check before buttoning everything up.

Yeah, I'm going to refill with the amount that I take out (with a splash to compensate for anything left in the filter) and then let the pooter tell me what it thinks should be added after that.

I really hate not having a mechanical dipstick

Is this something that can be bought? I've only seen people fashion them MacGyver style Oil level is a subject that I've always been overly **** about and I can't trust something that I can't see with my own eyes

And Thanks for that link Konigs Tiger!

Heres the info for where to purchase tool.

ZDMAK TOOLS

Engine Oil Dipstick
Item # MK-140-0110

Engine Oil Dipstick
This tool is about 3 ft long
Tool for measuring oil level also to check length of oil dipstick guide "pipe".
Please Note: While inserting this tool you should try to turn the dipstick carefully to allow for complete insertion.
Applicable: M112, 113, 271, 272, 642, 646, 647 & 648
The dipstick is a special tool and it not supposed to stay in the car, when you bottom out the dipstick and read the level, when the procedure is complete and the level is where it supposed to be REMOVE the DIPSTICK and replace cap on dipstick tube.
My number for this item is MK-140-0110
THE MERCEDES REFERENCE FOR THIS ITEM SHOULD BE 120-0721

Mind you I havent used it yet, as it came in after I finished my oil change. It just has metric markings on it.

So if you are not supposed to leave the dipstick in the car, can you buy one dipstick for both the Automatic Transmission Fluid AND for the Engine Oil? Can you get whichever is longer and use it to measure the level in either place? Thanks!

I am not sure you could use the same, it might be possible to "rig" one up using markings. I would just purchase both. You will also need to purchase the red locking tabs for the transmission tube, they are one time use.
