Keyless Go key question...

...my w211 has Keyless Go and, while the sale listing indicated 2 keys, I was only given one at delivery. The seller, Mercedes Financial, confirmed that the listing indicated two, and ordered me an additional one, which arrived today. It works, but only as a conventional key. When in the car, I see "key not detected" when trying to start with Keyless Go.

Is there some kind of programming that will make this key work right, or are there two different key "blanks", and I was given the wrong kind?

The new key and KG system are not compatible with each other since the audio frequency of the key has changed. When ordering keys replacement or duplicate needs to be specified. At any rate, visit any local dealer and mention bulletin P-B-80.35/52 and this should correct matter.

Your "smart" keys are individually programmed for your car. Programming is based upon your VIN and accessories activated by your key (e.g. keyless entry, start-up etc) to prevent theft i.e. it prevents others from starting your car without the correct key. If your dealer doesn't have the key programmer they will send it out which could take several days. They will ask you for ID, your VIN, and proof that you own the car before they will program it for you.

I just had the EXACT same problem. The dealer said they had 2 keys and then tried to say they only had one after the sale was finalized. Anyways, I ordered the new key and it came directly to the dealer. I had them program everything and it only too about an hour or so. Just so you know the process is very simple and straight forward. They put the key in and it takes like a half an hour to configure everything. then when prompted on the cluster they turn the key one more click to the on position and another half an hour goes by while it does its thing. Then it prompts that everything is synced and ready to go. Not sure how much they charge to do that if the dealer isnt paying it but thats the process.

Interesting. Mine only had one key at sale, but being CPO, they are required to provide 2. The dealership ordered a new key and had it FedEx'd to me within days. No special instructions were included, but it would not open the doors or start the car using Keyless Go. First time I inserted it into the ignition switch and turned it, some message popped up on the intrument cluster. After about 10 seconds, the message disappeared and I then was able to start the car. Immediately turned it off and it has worked ever since. Not sure what this 1 hour procedure is the dealership above followed...
