Change Plugs and Wires?

I just brought my 2003 E-500 in for B service (87,000 miles) and they said it needed C service instead. The car was running well but there was a small hesitation at slow speed at light throttle. I thought the service would take care of it but it didn't. The dealer says that I should have the plugs and wires replaced and get a fuel injector cleaning also. I didn't have it done there because I usually have a friend of mine with a general auto repair shop do the things that don't require special equipment.

The dealer wanted $800 for replacing the wires and $400 for replacing the plugs and another $350 for the injectors.

Am I crazy but this seems exorbitant for plugs, wires, and a can of injector cleaner.

Where can I get good quality wires and plugs so my friend can change them and do you think that this will help prolong the life of the car? I think it's time for the plugs and wires since they are 7 years old and electrical stuff does wear out.

This is a relatively easy job. ~1.5 hrs to change all the wires & spark plugs (2 per cylinder). Buy the OEM parts from www.autohausaz.com. Any indy shop can do this simple job at much lower rate than the dealer ship.
As for cleaning the fuel injectors, just buy a bottle of fuel injector cleaner from any auto store, put it into the tank and fill up the gas. Repeat once more if needed.

Thanks for the reply. That's it to clean the injectors? WOW! They made it seem like it was a big deal. I'll order the parts and have them installed.
Any other suggestions at 87,000 miles?

Chevron Techron for cleaning. Word of advise, find a reputable independent shop to do your work. It will save you a bunch of headaches.

Thanks Dynomite but I just came back from the hardware store and got Gumout Injector Cleaner. I saw the Techtron and one from CRC that guarantees you'll pass inspection but that's not my concern. I'll see if it works. If not, I'll try the Techtron brand. I'm using it because at 87,000 miles, I'm sure there's gunk everywhere. There's a slight hesitation at light throttle. Hope it takes care of it.

Check your MAf also. That could be cleaned with some CRC.

You are not crazy, the dealer is. SZMB is right on it. I got my plugs done on my E Class for $225. Plugs were about $85 or so..

On my CLS similar to your E500, I priced out the:

Bosch wires
OEM Bosch Plugs
$258.68

http://www.europartsdirect.com

OEM stuff, great prices.

03 E500 and Corvette
I did my own plugs for around $100. Didn't change the wires still were good.
I have done the following service myself:

Brakes
plugs
oil/filter
aux bat
tranny oil /filter
fan belt
idle pulley
cabin filters both
main bat

This saved big $$ and my work is quality because I know the tech really well.
