Enabling backup camera on NTG 2.5 E350
#26
Just wanted to update this thread with pics of the reverse cam installed on a 2009 E350. Pic quality is fantastic with this little cam, and its very small. Installation was pretty simple too.
Even though the camera came with a composite video cable long enough to do the job, I used a 20ft long monster double shielded Composite video cable to hook up the cam for better shielding against noise from original wire harness, and wired the camera to the reverse lamp positive, and to they body for ground.
Link to the RCA cable I used
Getting a clean pic of the screen is very hard, so these pics will have to do. The parking lines are a feature of the camera, and can be disabled very easily. I decided to keep the lines.

While this is an old thread, Ill help out since prices have come down on options other than the mid city vim unit.
If you want to enable your backup camera on your NTG2.5, you have 2 options
1.) Go to a shop that has Star Diagnostics computer or your dealer and have them enable it by coding your nav unit. This can cost you upwards of $150, if they agree to do it in the first place!
Or my favorite option,
2.) Go to ebay, buy these items
1- VIM and backup camera enabler unit CLICK HERE
2- NTG 2.5 FAKRA Video cable adapter CLICK HERE
3- Backup camera thats almost invisible once installed CLICK HERE Install on other side of trunk release latch (not the key hole side, the other side thats empty) to make it look original.
Total Cost for complete kit about $235 (mid city engineering charges $575 plus shipping for the same exact kit)
Once you install all 3 units, You press a series of buttons (instructions are sent with the unit) on your steering wheel to hard code your comand and enable the reverse camera input to turn on when your shift into reverse. You only do this once, and its hard coded into your ntg 2.5. You can even remove the VIM box once this is done and your comand will still keep the coding for the reverse camera. I have tested this and can confirm it works, because I bought 1 unit and coded 4 cars already with it. But most people want to also have VIM enabled anyway so keep the module installed.
You can take the power for the camera from either the reverse bulb (warning, some cars will trow a bulb out warning if you go this route) Or front the cig lighter wires under your navi unit which you will have to remove to get the navi out anyway.
For instructions on how to remove your navi and install this unit, just follow the mid city instructions found HERE
Hope this helps some of you out. This exact kit will work on all ntg 2.5 cars.

Yup. Thanks! Instructions for ntg2.5 are above. Enables Video in motion also with same module (item #1 above) by just pressing the hang up button on the steering wheel for 3 seconds. Disables automatically when key is turned off or by pressing the hang-up button again for 3 seconds.

I am in Sherman oaks and just got a 2104 glk350 with audio 20 and becker map pilot.
I cannot find the camera in the engineering menu which seems to have a different structure that the ones described on the site.
are you able to turn on the camera with an audio 20 media system.
thanks

Don't know if it's possible to add a backup cam to a 2014 glk. You would have to pull your head unit (radio) and see if there is a green FAKRA connector on that back that's not being used. If there is then it's possible.

MBWorld Fanatic!
Does this work for the 2007-2008 facelift COMAND unit? I assume it would also have a FAKRA connector that's free on the back but anyone know for sure?
#36
No. As far as I know. This only works on a ntg 2.5 equipped car. Only 2009 model year E-classes came with ntg 2.5 comand units installed. You can do a retrofit. But it's not cheap. You will need to replace quite a bit and have it all coded.
#38
If your COMAND NTG1 has a green FAKRA connector then it is possible. Up to June 2009 there were NTG1 COMAND in use, then they switched to NTG2.5.

2007 Mercedes-Benz E350
Hey J,
good job, man!
I live in the New York city and I own a 2007 Mercedes-Benz E350. I read the forum and would like to install a back up camera on my car, as well. However, I am not that savy, so I would really appreciated if you could give me step-by-step, dummy-style instructions.
What I have purchased so far are: camera and video cable. My first confusion is that, this forum refers to a "comand ntg 2.5" and I don't even know what kind of comand I have. Looking for pictures to see how my 2007 model comand radio unit looks alike in the back and sides, I see that it...doesn't. I don't see gps, T-Harness and all other ports...unless I would have to take some cover off...
Would you be so kind to help me out installing the back-up camera, please?
Thanks a bunch!

Your 2007 has a NTG1, as of 06/2009 they switched to the NTG2.5.
If your NTG1 doesn't have the video in connector (green FAKRA connector on back of COMAND) then you won't be able to connect your camera.

Thank you, Mack!
Is there a chance to find out if my 2007 comand unit has a FAKRA green port, without taking the unit out?

No! But I guarantee you 101% you wont have one. Your COMAND is a U.S. spec COMAND without a video button. A backup camera system was never intended to be used with a NTG1 and hence Harman/Becker changes the hardware which includes the elimination of a FAKRA connector.

Got it. What about this scenario: what if I find an owner who parts out his 2009 E350, purchase the comand radio unit and swap it with mine. Would that work? What about the fiber optics, gps, Bluetooth and all other ports? Would it be a perfect match for all other connections or by gaining a Fakra port I would be losing some other connections/features?
Thanks.
Thanks.
