Warning Message Assistance Needed

Recently when I crank my 2003 E500 I get the following warning message "Battery Protection Convenient features temporarily unavailable". Goes out after I drive a little while and don't see again when I crank the car when it is warm. Only has occurred when cranking car in the mornings. What contributes to this warning? Was thinking that my auxillary battery may be going bad, but have not received and other warnings. Input appreciated in advance.

Note: Saw threads associated with recall due to voltage regulator, but was interested in hearing from people who had "old" batteries (assuming my batteries maybe never have been replaced as I purchased the car used in early 2006 and have not replaced and probable was not replaced before I purchased as it is a 2003 model). 7 years seems pretty long for batteries as it is really 8 years as the car was put in service last of 2002.

Your battery(ies) need replacing. Check voltages and get to work.
