Need Nav Update disc (W211 589 15 22 00)
I've recently installed Nav in my 2005 E320 CDI. This vehicle has the COMAND APS headunit, and I installed the separate Navigation processor (DVD reader) in the trunk...which is where the map DVD goes. Anyway, the Nav system seems to work just fine, and it will read older versions of map DVDs (2005) just fine, but it won't read the latest version (v 9.0, 2010). Screen says "No DVD Please insert a Navi-DVD (car-trunk)" .
After doing a fair bit of research, I've learned that the Nav processor (in the boot/trunk) firmware/software needs to be updated to allow it to read the newer map DVDs. Because each year (version) of maps usually comes with some software updates, this problem happens when you skip several years(versions). In short, the unit hasn't gotten all of the necessary updates.
The update disc (part number W211 589 15 22 00) is purported to costs less than $20, so my first stop was the dealer. Problem is, they won't sell it to me because they say they can't sell specialty MB "tools" to the public.
I've found plenty of places on the internet to download the disc image, and have tried every way to Sunday to burn it to a DVD, but the nav drive simply won't recognize my burned DVDs, and as such, it won't update. Nothing happens when I insert these burned DVDs.
So, I'm wondering if anybody out there has this disc, and would be willing to sell it, or perhaps let me borrow it. Once again, the part number is W211 589 15 22 00.
The other option would be to get my hands on the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 maps discs....and insert each in succession to allow the necessary updates to occur. But this seems like a heck of alot more hoops to jump through....versus just getting one Nav update disc.
For what it's worth, my headunit has been updated to the latest version (shows Estimated time of arrival, etc), so I'm not in need of the head unit update disc (which is part number W211 589 14 22 00)....I only need the aforementioned Nav update.
Thanks in advance, TJ

It's not necessarily true that you need each successive year of Nav DVD's in order to read the latest. When I last went to the dealer, I gave the part number and told them to make sure my COMAND and NAV drive were completely up to date with any necessary updates. I went from a 2004.1 disc to a 2009.1 without an issue.

Ok, thanks for the clarification that you may need not install each and every (yearly) update to ensure that the software is kept up to date. I didn't mean to imply that was the case.
However...it seems if you skip too many years, some of the necessary updates are skipped too. Hence the reason MB created the Nav Update disk.
This problem (of Nav processors not recognizing newer discs) has been well documented in a number of forums, and I'm simply assuming that this is my problem with the 2010 North America DVD (v 9.0) that I have. I tried a friends 2005 Map version DVD, and it worked just fine.

Woohoo!...I have NAV
Great news. I finally got my Nav working last night, but via a rather unorthodox manner, I might add.
First, I tried re-burning the Nav Update disc (W211 589 15 22 00) several more times. This time, using DVD-R media (Hp brand to be specific). I even tried book-typing the disc to DVD-ROM too, and no matter what I did, nothing would happen when I inserted these discs.
So, as a long-shot/last-ditch effort, I decided to take the OEM Map disc (2010 North America DVD, v9.0) and try to image it, then burn a fresh copy. To my absolute amazement, it worked. For what it's worth, I used DVD-R media, and did NOT book type it to DVD-ROM....just burned the DVD from the iso image normally (using DVD Decrypter). When I inserted the burned copy of the OEM map DVD into the Nav processor, an update occured, and then my maps came up straight away. Utterly amazing to me. Apparently, my Nav processor simply didn't like the OEM DVD...or perhaps the DVD was flawed....I don't know. All I know is, I'm a happy camper at this point as I finally have Navigation.
Anybody wanna buy an OEM Map DVD (2010 North America DVD, v9.0)? Just kidding...I'll probably hang onto it just in case....although it seems I'll never actually use it now. Cheers, TJ

Sorry....but I won't pirate software. I bought the original OEM DVD with the full intention of using it. After trying everything in the book to make it work on my newly installed NAV system, I decided to copy it...to see if perhaps there was something wrong with that OEM dvd. It worked (for me), but I'm not making copies for others. I'm sure there plenty of unscupulous web sites out there that already provide this data to the world, and as such, no need for me to be a party to it.
Funny thing is...I bought the OEM disc used, and I'm wondering if the seller did the same thing. Bought it...copied it...and then sold the original. Oh well. Cheers, TJ

I did not find where you got the OEM DVD. Was it from an MB dealer? Some sell copies that look very original. I assume it was really an original DVD but then it must have had some issues that prevented the Navi processor to read it properly, did the surface of the DVD look good? The point is that the Navi DVD drive is very sensitive, I mean fails easily if the DVD has any issues, not sure if this is even intentional to avoid copies being used (like scratches, poor quality DVD copy etc.). It could have had some read issues that a better R/W DVD drive was able to manage and then the copy DVD looked better than the original (the DVD media must have been good too, the Navi processor does not read all DVD media at all).

I bought the OEM DVD on eBay. Before doing so, I asked the seller if it was an original, and he guaranteed me that it was. Said he bought from MB for his E320, but his car was in a wreck and subsequently totaled. So, he removed the disc, and decided to sell it. The disc certainly appears to be an original to me. I say that because it has a screen printed label/face, and it has the word 'NAVTEQ' etched into the clear hub portion of the disc. The surface looks fine to me. Couple of VERY minor scuffs, and super light scratches that look like normal handling wear to me. In short, I see nothing obvious that should prevent the disc from being read properly.
All I know is....my NAV drive doesn't like the disc. Quite honestly, it was really a long shot....to copy and re-burn it onto a fresh DVD, but I'm certainly glad I tried it, because it worked.

That why my car is missing the DVD!
I'm missing the DVD.
I think I may have bought the guy's wrecked car,
less the DVD. How much are they?

For what it's worth, my headunit has been updated to the latest version (shows Estimated time of arrival, etc), so I'm not in need of the head unit update disc (which is part number W211 589 14 22 00)....I only need the aforementioned Nav update.

That's what I did. My used car was missing the disc, the dealer agreed to ship me a new one. While I was waiting I found a 2009 disc as a torrent. Downloaded and it ran perfectly. When the dealer finally got me my 2010 Disc, I copied it, saved the image, and sold it. Honestly, what do they expect at 250 a pop?

I'm sure you can find them out there via a google search.
Or buy the latest one off ebay:
