STUTTGART -- ... Meanwhile, Mercedes' management board has decided on the name CLS for the luxurious new E class Coupe.
The four-door offshoot of the current 211 series will be equipped more luxuriously than the sedan and the station wagon. The letter "S" is supposed to be align the model more closely with the high-end S-class range.
The CLS, the basic version of which will have six cylinders, will be launched in early 2005."

Scoop! 1st photos of Mercedes Smart headed to USA!
That same Automotive News link has a feature on the new Smart that is coming to the US in 2004 or 2005. It notes it is being built in Brazil and is called the Smart for 4 (or something like that) and is a 5 door hatchback that looks like a cross between the British Mini and the German VW. Should be a hot seller if Daimler Chrysler prices it right.
