bearings in rear differential going out

bearings in rear differential going out
I have an 06 211 500 4matic - Recently the rear end was humming and howling - it was very obvious to me it was the rear diff going - cost - 2900 inc tax etc
Is this in line? Anyone know if there has been issues with these? Any indication
the factory might work with me on this? I have a good independent with qualified and certified MB techs that are considerably cheaper than MB shops - the parts are not available from anyone but MB - they do make rebuilt differential which is what this is -
Any suggestions or comments are appreciated
