NTG1 COMAND APS inside
What I have discovered is that the model I have (7042) has a DVD unit with the part number DV-04-042.
A quick google search and I have managed to source a replacement for the drive, so it looks like this could be a cheap fix - under £35 delivered!
I just thought I would post this up as I believe in Knowledge sharing!
Also, from what I can tell looking at the pictures above, the earlier model is similar to the later, it just looks like the drive has been changed to a different model, I personally cannot see anything wrong with replacing those drives with a later - the cable looks identical.
One last thing, the place I got it from lists it as a Mercedes / BMW unit, so hopefully this will work!
I shall keep you all appraised.

Good luck.

Hope this works...
But I think I've just realized that you are talking about the head unit - I'm referring to the actual unit in the boot.
Too many components.
The new replacement unit is identical to the original unit so that was a good start and I was feeling confident that this may work.
The good news is that before the unit wouldn't read a DVD, no matter if original or backup DVD - after replacing this drive unit it works!
So if anybody is having the dreaded cannot read DVD from the SatNav system - search for the DV unit and get a replacement - seems to fix it - all for £36 delivered.
The good thing is that now this unit is obsolete, the parts can be found relatively cheaply online.
If people are having the DVD cannot be read issue, and feel brave then I would recommend getting a replacement DVD drive unit - cheaper than replacing the whole lot, and for my problem albeit with the Sat-Nav unit, changing the drive fixed it for me
As I plan to replace it (audio CD works OK, but DVD-Rs are read from time to time only), I want to confirm that there are really two types of these units, and if there are, are they interchangeable? Obviously do not want to throw away 100 bucks plus shipping

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
P.S. And regarding whether two types of DVD drives are interchangeable - I guess the answer is no?
