2018 E400 4matic Wagon
Treadwear Question

I have Michelin Michelin Pilot HX-MXM4, size 245/45x17 on a 4matic wagon, and I have a feeling these tires will be totally worn by the time time I've got 30,000 miles on them. How much life have others been getting from these?

Also, I've heard that the TPMS sensors have batteries that last no more than 6 years, and they's quite expensive to replace. Should I plan on replacing those when I replace the tires, assuming the car is 4 years old at that time?

I've driven on mine 30K miles and still have quite a bit of tread left. Can't say how much but I wouldn't be surprised if I got another 20K. I have them checked every 8K miles for even treadware and rotate as needed.

30,000 miles is a fair amount of miles for that Michelin considering you have AWD.

Yes, replace the batteries -safety is important...

I had no idea the TPMS sensors had batteries and that they had to be replaced. Does a warning come up on the instrument cluster when the batteries get low?

MB recommends replacing if over 5 years old battery is not replaceable sensor must be replaced. The only way to definitively check remaining battery life is for dealer or independent to check it with DAS but since you will have access you can check the production date stamped on sensor (day/month/year).

If you decide to replace, current part # is 0025407917 (315 MHZ) - autohausaz.com $92.57 you may also want to check http://www.tirerack.com/about/salesman_contact.jsp

After 22,000 spirited highway miles, mine still looked brand new with (it appears) most of original tread still there when I changed my wheels to 19". Original wheels and tires are in a Tirerack tire rack high on the garage wall above garage door.

If the battery runs down, will I get a warning on my console? My car is just shy of 4 years old.

Thanks. I found 4 sensors for $244 at Tire Rack, which seems like a good deal. I think I'll just get these when I buy tires and change them all at one time to avoid the headache and expense of going back a year or so later to have the tires dismounted, sensors replaced, and tires remounted and rebalanced.

You'll probably get the same warning as when a tire is low or flat.
