Strange little box under car:

1. A week ago I had a new alternator installed under warranty in our recently acquired 2006 E500 wagon by a dealer.

2. Today the wife came home complaining of strange squeeks over bumps, so I ran the car up on my ramps and found a small stone wedged in the lower control arm inner mounts, so I removed it and the noise disappeared, BUT

3. while prowling around under the rest of the front end, I discovered that there was a small box (c. 1 1/4" X 1 1/4" X 3") partly protruding from a hole in the belly pan, and marked with these numbers: 0029973286 and PPTV20. The problem is that the little box is installed longitudinally in the car in a transverse hole and as a result, it is tearing up the edge of the hole in the belly pan. Is this an important part and its position anything to panic over??

It's a plastic jack point. Or what Daimler calls a "workshop lifting jack take up device."

The "PPTV20" part # is just a name for a type of oil impervious plastic.

Should this thing be installed transversely

rather than longitudinally?? The current longitudinal position makes no sense to me, since it grinds on the edges of the transverse opening around it.
