Brakes/Rotors Question

My dad recently got a set of new tires, he has 30,000 miles on his 2007 E350. The guys there said he needed new brakes, rotors, and a brake fluid flush is optional (Dobbs). My question is at what milage do you need to get these things done and if they were suppose to be done on any of the handful of services that I've had done at the Mercedes dealership and if $600 sounds right for the new brakes and rotors. I'm not very knowledgeable about this so any help is appreciated. Meanwhile I'm going to do some research online. -thanks in advance.

You can do your brake pads and rotors your self, the DIY is posted here already. $600 is outrageous.

this, and in my experience tire places will tell you that you need brakes to upsell you and get service most don't get done there regardless of if you do or not trying to catch people who don't know better. That and the techs will take your perfectly good brake parts and sell them on craigslist or use them for themselves.

Ruthless!!

No wonder an indie shop was like "oh you need new pads and rotors - rotors are too far gone to be machined...." only to take it to my local (legit) spot to be told 'no you just need pads, and resurface, theres plenty left on the rotors....'

Thanks for the heads up on that one!

Brakes and rotor really depend on how someone drives. I get over 50k out of mine, but others might only get 30k. Brake fluid flush is EVERY 2 YEARS regardless of mileage.

brakes and rotors really do depend on how your drive. you should ask the tech what the reading is on the rotors because that will tell you if you need to replace or just have them turned and get new pads.

You need new pads when the brake wear warning shows on your instrument cluster. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise - considering you aren't having braking issues. When you are due for a brake change, inspect rotors before you might unnecessarily purchase them.

A lot of shops nowadays unfortunately don't want to turn rotors anymore. Especially for our cars. There's a lot of liability involved; if they screw something up in the machining process and ruin a rotor, it's on them to replace it.

At 110,000 miles I have installed 2 sets of pads and they still look new, Origional rotors
are still on the car. They are getting close to wear limits but still acceptable.

So how often to change of course depends on your driving. I found when the + in the FSS is on I can just about double the miles already driven before the visit workshop shows up.
