Fuel Leak

So right after my extended warranty is over, theres a problem with gas smell/leakage. According to the service dept, the Fuel sending unit or whatever and the entire gas tank needs to be replaced. REALLY?! The repair cost is also hefty at $1K+. Are there any updates regarding to recall or petitions for this issue, as I've found out its quite common for w211s. Considering where its located at and the fumes from it isn't it a safety issue that should be addressed by Mercedes considering its a design flaw?

check your fuel pump! remove the rear seat and behind the driver, remove the cover and once you see the pump and fuel all over the pump, you will know that all you need is a pump.
from the dealer 510 bucks.
I have the same exact problem right now, just ordered the pump.

'12 Mustang 5.0, '89 Supra Turbo, C55,
I remember reading about a fuel leak in the W211 AMG section. Ck. it out. I can't remember if the problem is a TSB. Good luck!
