E350 tire change question

Hi

I have a question regarding my 2006 E-350 tires of 45k miles.

I noticed my rear tires almost wear out, have no track while my front tire looks new. My dealer told me rear tire wears faster than front. My repair shop told me the front wears faster and they have rotated tires when I sent car for service. So I am confused. Is front tire wear faster or rear tires?

Since the rear have almost no track, I need to change 4 tires. What tire should I use? I want quite tires with good mileage and reasonable price.

The dealer offers Michelin pilot MXM 4 ($199 each), Installation charge ($165), alignment ($185). Is this good deal? I am in northern California.

Cheers

MXM4 will mostly provide a quiet ride with moderate performance. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus will provide better handling and performance. Continental DWS will provide better all season performance for any rain and light snow, and are also quiet and smooth. Check out pricing on tirerack.com before buying from a dealer, who is usually the highest price source.

My personal opinion is that there is no need for an alignment unless ur car is pulling or ur tire wear isn't uniform. I've had the conti dws for a couple of months and wet traction is amazing. They are quiet but not as quiet as my previous general altimax. If u don't need to worry about all season driving, stick with Michelens

Since the (non-4-matic) W211 is rear-wheel drive, the rear tires will typically wear faster. If it's a 4-matic, then my guess is that you'll still see more wear in the rear but not quite as much. Still, if the tires have never been rotated then you'll see a pretty dramatic difference in wear between front and rear.

If you're not rocking 4-matic, then you can just replace the rear 2 tires and start working on a rotation schedule once they wear down closer to where the fronts currently are. But AWD systems are much more fussy about all 4 tires being worn the same, since they need to be the same size to avoid problems with the front and rear wheels turning at different speeds.

Regardless of whether you have 2 or 4 wheel drive, you want the tires with more tread on the back. That will keep you on the road better if you hydroplane or slip. Also, I'd be very suspicious of a repair shop telling me my RWD car's front tires should wear faster...that would be the last conversation I had with them.

Oh, and I'll second the recommendation for Conti DWS - they're simply the best all-season tire you can get. I have run them on 3 cars and wouldn't buy anything else.
