2004 E320 Oil Level

A month ago I did my first DIY oil and filter change. I used a top side oil extractor for the first time. When adding the new oil I followed the owner's manual for the proper oil required. I purchased a dip stick a year ago because I feel more comfortable than the electronic reading. Today I checked the dip stick and it reads 180. Should it be at 170 or is 180 OK? The extractor may have left a little in the crankcase... Thanks

It should be 170-172mm. If it reads 180mm, then you have to remove 0.6 liters of oil. What does the electronic display give you?

I found the extractor leaves about 3/4 of a pint behind so adding the total amount will put you a tad bit over. I normally add 7 1/2 qts vs 8 to mine. Still use topsider not worried about small amount left due to convience. At 114,000 miles still uses no oil between 13,000 changes so apparently nothing is hurt by the remaining amount.

Hello Paul hope all is well.

Hi vettdvr,
Thx for asking -- hope things are also well with you/family. I just got done getting a set of Conti Extreme Contact DWS for my Boxster and a set of Nokian WRG2 for the wife's E320 -- I'm expecting a lousy winter this season up here in the northeast -- at least you're past the hurricane season in your area.

Regards,
paul...

I lucked out on my first try. I used my topside extractor and guessed when I had enough oil out. After using my dip stick I had drawn it down from 182 to exactly 170. I was surprised that it amounted to about 1 quart of oil. That is a lot of extra oil in the crankcase. Thanks for all of your constructive feedback.
