hey, great alternative!

how much did the components cost?

how bout installation?

If you have any more info on the installation, that would be very helpful. I'm planning on doing the same thing w/ the alpine setup, however i'm still contemplating where to place the screen. Thanks

oh yeah, do you have a picture of the screen in relationship to whole winshield display? i was thinking of putting it where you did, but was unsure of how much visibility will be decreased? is it too obstructive? Thanks so much for the info.

This position looks like a driving hazard to me. The frame appears to droop on the left. It is voice controlled? Does it issue voice instructions?

It is no obtrusive and is removable as well.......being very "picky" with the lean on the left but it maybe because of the angle the pic was taken. I will take a pic of the entire dash when i get a sec.

Everything ran me $2400 with install. Alpine Nav, Alpine 6.8" monitor, DVD, tuner for the DVD to run audio through the radio.

It is not voice controlled but controlled via remote... it does give voice instruction through a speaker on the back of the TV. so i can use the radio and the Nav at the same time.

as for the installation, they ran the wire for the monitor up through the dash and through i think one of the air vents which was then passed through the center speaker grete. a brackette needed to be inserted and screwed into the dash but hidden by the grete. the only cut that needed to be made was a cut of one of the center supports that run down the middle of the back of the grete. all unoticible once installed. Nothing else on the car needed to be touched. Hopefully this helps!

I had the Alpine navi in my 98 E320. The screen was motorized in that it hid in the console when not in use. It was the closest to a James Bond like gadget I have had. The Alpine nav was sweet back then. I used the remotes the first month then put them in the glove box. I had the CD changer (the second remote) integrated also (in the trunk). In 98 the cost was $4K. The only thing I did not care for was the led color which was greenish and the 98 console had off-brown led tones so they sort of clashed. See, I'm too picky.

Note: I received points off at the local MB Concourse for having this installation.

It must be nice to have a lot of money. I think it looks very after market. Not worth it, unless you live in your car. Just my $.02

.02

.02? are you sure that you even have that left after spending your whole wad on an e320? are you sure that you want to give that .02 away, don't you need every penny you have to fill the tank?

(If you ganna give it, i'm gonna give it back)

and yes while it does look after market (which most mods do), I like it and have gotten several compliments on it in only the 3 days i've had it. Plus i didn't void warrenty nor have to change anything on the HK Logic 7 system.

jayse500,

it looks very nice!! I've heard Alpine Nav is more accurate than the orignial 2003 e-class nav. one of my friends just bought e-class without nav and plan to install just like yours, which i couldn't understand. but i like how it looks now.

does it rattle?

is there any places you can install other than the center speaker?

thanks! i was thinking about installing it to the bottom of the rear view but then thought if i move the mirror then that might be a problem.... you can also try installing it on a "goose neck" that they normally use for phones. the goose neck would install to the side pannel on the passenger side of the center consol. after looking at all the options i thought this was the best mounting location.

The nave is the best on the market from my research. as for your friend getting the 03 without nav.....he had no other option....MB didn't offer Nav on the 03 eclass and might not in the 04 from my readings.... but if he goes this route with the Alpine it's a good choice.

I agree that the Alpine nav is one of, if not the best on the market.
My Alpine nav install project has taken a bit longer than expected since the installer had to make a sunvisor from scratch out of fiberglass to replicate the factory unit and then wait a few weeks for the factory matching fabric.
The large Alpine screen is set into the drivers secondary (smaller) sunvisor and is designed to fold up into the original location when not in use.
The complete install is supposed to happen next week. After complete I will post some pictures of what should be a very clean install.

The Alpine nav unit I bought a few years a go and had in a previous vehicle. The current install work is being done at CustomExotica in Mountain View (the same guys that did my CrystalGuard and the company is owned by the same guy that owns Crystalguard for the USA).
They do some really nice custom work.

Sorry I do not recall the price.
I bought it at AMS car stereo in Campbell on Camden Avenue near Hiway 17.
Sorry, I also do not recall the model number, but it is one of the DVD units and not the older CD based units.
