Is getting the Mercedes extended warranty out of the question?
Those prices seem VERY high. You can generally get the Mercedes extended warranty 100K miles, 7 years for around $3-4K from a dealer willing to sell it to you, unless they have recently changed things. The Mercedes warranty has a $0 deductible.

Be careful with the conditions! Double check everything, for example how much of the labor costs is covered (some extended warranties do not cover full labor rate at MB service). Check if the extended warranty issuer agree to use OEM parts - some will pay only for after-market parts.
Check very carefully what is covered and what is not.
When buying extended warranty the best is to expect the worse - usually the dealer wants to trick you in many ways.

I paid $3K for 3 years/36000 miles bumper to bumper from "Easy Care" for their "Total Care" package. $250.00 deductible
2 years ago: 2004 E-500, 74K miles.
Good program, they even covered the air struts and had to to change the 2 front ones, and the heat exchanger valve. Bill from MB dealer: $4K.

They did eventually cover the valve cover repair, ($150) and flat tire repair ($350)
OP- if you have a credit union, go through them. They have better extended warranty/vehicle service contracts.

Thanks for the reco Mr. Lima!
Full exclusionary coverage for that car, from a good company that allows for dealer labor/part prices, with $100 deductible per visit, is $4473 for a 3 year, 36K mile plan.
That's about what most Tier I companies will charge. They're taking on risk to 100K miles on a Mercedes diesel, so they need a pretty high reserve to cover potential/average claims.
If you'd like more info, feel free to email me at brucem105@comcast.net. I have thousands of clients, and hundreds in the particular plan I mentioned above. And almost all of them are MB, Audi, or BMW. Everyone is happy with their claims experience.
Thanks.

I'm glad I opted to buy my 04 E500 w/an aftermarket extended warranty that the orig buyer had purchased. Worth the extra $2K I paid for the car to have it covered for 34K or til 1/2014.
