i just had a question on radar detectors, do they spot every single cop on the road, or just certain ones? also, can they detect unmarcked cop cars? thanks

The radar detectors do just as their name implies. They detect radar (and some detect laser also) emmitted from radar guns. The police keep changing the technology to defeat the detectors and the detectors just keep changing to keep up.

I would not be surprised to find that the cops radar and laser guns are made by the same people who can just keep the pot boiling and continue to sell more equipment to both sides.

It would not matter what kind of car the radar gun was used from. It could be from a bicyle or on foot and it would all work the same.

I'll stick with my Valentine One. It has incredible range, and the direction arrows that show where the RADAR/LASER is coming from.

No. They will only detect (or read) emissons by speed guns, either radar or laser. The better ones will detect most police devices...some are pretty lame from what I understand.
None will protect you everytime. The police guns use different "bands" and you have to have a detector that will read the one the police gun is emitting on.

There are some people on here who use them all the time and know a lot more than I do.

Added: You might be able to pick up ElDiabloJoe if he were driving in front of you...I understand that he puts out some personal emissions of his own :p

I have a valentine one and like it. The other day I went by a shopping mall and it maxed out at 9 radars. That would be a great place for a cop to hide because there is so much noise!!!

I thought about that when I first got my V1, but then I realized CA cops don't use X band anymore.

The Valentine One rules IMHO...

The Passport 8500 is close in range, but it doesn't have the directional arrows! Those arrows are key to survival when tracking radar.

The V-1 will, like many other top notch detectors, track multiple bogeys (signals) at the same time. The major difference is that the V-1 will tell you where they are coming from. This is important...

I was recently tracking a cop in front of me on K-band and all of the sudden, I started getting K-band single bursts from the rear.

The front arrow was still blinking, indicating a stronger signal. But after about 1 minute, the rear arrow started blinking and a trooper passed me from the rear with the cop in front of me in plain view!

Without arrows, all you get is "BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!" It really gives you confidence if you know where the signals are coming from.

Due to the Doppler Principle, cops cannot accurately measure your speed when you're traveling perpendicular to their line of radar/laser fire. You either need to be coming or going when they zap you. The V-1 has front/rear/side arrows.

Anyhow, other detectors like the PP8500 have nice range and features, but the arrows are key.

I drove a cordless PP Solo 5 for years and it saved me many times, but the V-1 is much, much better.

We all still have to drive smart! No, I'm not a salesman! I just love the V-1!

I couldn't agree more. If you really want serious radar detection, V-1 is the way to go. The downside of the unit is its brick-like size.

Thanks for sharing thoughts on the V1, however, as a 16 year owner of passport/escort, I have to say that it has the best range of any detector out there and has saved me from going to jail on multiple occassions, due to my heavy foot.
