W211 E320 cdi
W211 noisy SBC pump - advice sought
Hi all, I have just acquired a beautiful W211 E320 cdi. Previously had a W210, also E320 cdi.
The new one is Jan 2004, on a 53 plate, I bought privately from an old chap who had owned it from 9 months old and it was his pride and joy.
It has done just 52000 miles from new, and is pretty much spotless inside and out.
My only real issue is that the SBC pump is in my opinion very noisy, and comes on often.
I have read numerous threads on this and other forums about this problem on W211s.
I know there is a modified pipe with a damper fitted to later models (mine does not have this, I have checked).
I also know that some people have had the pump changed FOC regardless of age and no warranty.
So as my mileage is low, and the car 8 years old a couple of questions:
1 - I know there is a counter that will eventually bring up an error. Is this likely to happen soon? Or would my relatively low mileage make that unlikely?
2 - If I take it to a dealer and have them put it on diagnostic (I know I will have to pay about £75 for this) - is there any possibility that they will offer to fit the damper pipe without charge?
3 - If the answer to 2 were no, then any idea what the pipe and fitting cost would be? And can this be done by my local garage or must it be MB?
I know nobody has clear cut answers, I would just like to know what experience others have had.
The car was serviced by dealer until 40000 miles and since by independent.
Many thanks
Johnny.
Sorry should add I am in UK so most interested in replies from owners who have dealt with this here.

Cycling on and off noise is normal for an electric pump. Find another like yours and listen to see if it is significantly different. My E 500 sounds like a jet taking off when I first start up on the outside. Inside it is quiet.

because of the problems with that system MB extended the warranty to 10 years, so you may want to have it check while its free to repair...
