Use startekinfo to look up VIN data...
See the thread below. If you are in the USA, you can subscribe for free. You will have to supply a credit card, but it does not actually cost anything.
Once you subscribe, you will click on a link that downloads/opens a java tool called EPC that lets you look up parts, etc. If you enter the VIN of a particular vehicle you can do two things..
1) it will tailor parts queries to that particular car, and gray out parts that don't apply
2) you can do a "Datacard" ctrl-F6 or click on the blue car icon toward the top. This will give you details of the VIN, such as date of delivery, the true model type and the options the car left the factory with. That's what I did to determine the alleged E55 is a fake.

Stay AWAY! looks like crap. If you are in St. Louis, look up a place called Schwartz LTD. in Brentwood. I purchased my E320 from them with 42k 4 years ago. Now have 110k and have NEVER had an issue with it. They are a German family run business. Trust me, worth your time to look into this place.

Fake
One of the easiest ways to tell is the engine will have a badge on top of it with a signed name of the engine assembler. Also, the speedometer will have an amg badge under it, the seats will have badging and the tail pipes will be engraced with the Amg logo. If all this has been done the title work and Vin will have the true answer.

I’m pretty sure I bought a fake E55 too...
Hello,
Im new to this forum but I thought this would be the best place for info. I bought what looks like an AMG E55 2003 but I think it’s a replica conversion. I’m perfectly fine with that if it has a AMG engine swap. I really bought it as a project anyways because of how solid the engine and undercarriage looked.
I’m pretty sure the engine doesn’t match the vin but if someone can confirm I was reading the engine serial number correctly I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot. I found the original owners phone number on repair invoices and he says the decals were just for show.
Do you guys think it’s worth converting to an E55? I found used engines with 1 year warranties.
Im not looking to blow the bank but I’d like to maybe have some fun with this one since it really isn’t worth much as a E320.

It is not an easy to convert a E320 to E55, you can't just swap the motor, you will need an E55 computer and the matching EIS at a minimum. for the amount you would spend, you would be better off spending the $9-12K that E55s are going for these days.
by the way your Engine Serial number should be 112949 31 445470 and that would be a 3.2L V6

Lol
you guys are harsh lol. Give me a break please; it’s my first Benz. I bought to flip but fell in love with it so I wanted to rebuild it. I just didn’t know if it had a full amg conversion done. It’s definitely a regular left handed driver and my engine looks like this...
Any help with links to ensure I’m restoring back to stock would be appreciated. I’m thinking about restoring the engine and tranny. Let the trolling begin lol...
