Auto Trunk Closer problems

I have the auto trunk closer. Starting a little over a year ago, it would occasionally stop closing halfway through the process and open back up. Normally, I'd just press the button again and it would close properly (without any of the mechanical noise of a typical close, like the spring was already "loaded"). Usually this happened when it was either windy out or the car was on a slight incline/decline. That happened about once every 20-30 closes.

Beginning in the last few months, this is now happening more than 50% of the time, and when the car is parked flat as well. I always press the button and give it 2 or 3 more shots before I manually close the trunk.

The mechanicals seem fine, as all the motors still do their thing. but it's just like the trunk gets halfway there, gives up, and then exerts the effort to raise itself again. It makes no sense.. A quick search has found all sorts of problems related to motors and shorted out wiring harnesses, but if my problems were the same, I would suspect the thing wouldn't work at all...

The lid on my wife's '06 wagon needs

a squirt of WD-40 on the hinge pins every now and then. It seems that the safety gadget to prevent it from closing on peoples' heads and fingers is too sensitive and any extra resistance triggers it.

Ahh, I'm going to give that a shot, that might explain why it tends to happen when its windier, colder (stiffer), or on an angle. I'll give that a shot.. it's been frustrating because I haven't been able to find a mechanical cause.
