Considering purchasing an 07 C350 4Matic!!
Hi,
What a great thread!
I am considering buying a low mileage (under 70K Miles) 2007 C350 4Matic for my wife, and would very much like to hear the pros and cons of this model.
As I was researching this model I came across the balance shaft issue.
I have downloaded the M272 Timing Error PDF, and understand it affects engines up to certain numbers, so will be looking for that info.
As I look at cars, how can I get the engine number from the VIN? The Russian site does not seem to be working (or maybe it's because I don't speak Russian...)
I am a long time MB owner, and have a '95 E320 Cab as my daily driver so have dealt with the wiring harness issues on that car. I still like driving it at 160K.
I am an experienced mechanic, but do not wish to replace engine internals unless I really have to.
Thank you in advance for your comments.
John

Class Action suit! Majeed Seifi, et al. v. Mercedes Benz USA LLC, Case No. 3:12-cv-05
[This is a duplicate posting from Class Action suit over M272 M273.]
Does anyone have any information about the CLASS ACTION SUIT? A lot of Mercedes are driven by lawyers. Help us out!
The information for which I am looking is whether any of you owners (present or past) of the affected M272 and M273 engines have received any notice of this suit or invitations to join the class of plaintiffs. Also, if you have received such paperwork, from whom did you receive it (name and mailing address). There must be a "settlement administrator." (Perhaps this information is buried in the middle of the previous pages. By page number three, this thread had deteriorated into philosophy about unreliable consumer products. The last couple of pages are all about requests to check VINs, information that is available from EPCnet Online - see below.)
I did my own homework last night, so I didn't have to impose on Konigstiger to discover that my engine is one of those affected. I used EPCnet Online: https://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp. [Thank you, Konigstiger.] EPCnet is the official MB Electronic Parts Catalog. You have to subscribe, but the subscription is free for subscribers in N. America. You have to give a credit card, but that is just to prove that you do live in NA. The website is meant for MB professionals, for whom it is part of their life. For the rest of us, the website is very difficult. Read the directions very carefully. You will be able to input your VIN and find your Data Card. That will give you your engine number.
Then, "M272 engines sold between 2004 and 2008 with engine serial numbers below 2729..30 468993 often show early wear of the balance shaft gears." (Wikipedia) The corresponding serial number for M273 engines is 2739..30 088611. (Compare the last eight digits.)
The Mercedes-Benz M272 & M273 Engine Class Action is Majeed Seifi, et al. v. Mercedes Benz USA LLC, Case No. 3:12-cv-05493, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The present case status is found at http://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-s...-class-action/. As of 12/01/14, the plaintiffs had moved for a PARTIAL summary judgment. If granted, MB would be found liable in principle, but further proceedings would have to be held to determine the amount MB has to pay. After the lawyers get the first bite, the remainder would be divided among the members of the class. The next hearing is 01/15/15.
The plaintiffs are represented by Roy A. Katriel of the Katriel Law Firm and Gary S. Graifman of Kantrowitz Goldhamer & Graifman PC. It is not clear to me whether the class of plaintiffs for this suit is nationwide or only of Calif. owners and lessees. Atty. Katriel's website says he is petitioning on behalf of Calif. owners and lessees. Atty. Graifman's website is not clear.

replacement engine found
Would a 2007 E350 engine be a direct swap for a 2006 E350? I have found a used E350 and if it's not in the affected range I figure I might have better luck taking this route.
Thanks,

Definitely getting after market warranty
Just bought a 2006 SLK 350 yesterday (73k) and found this out today. Arghhhh.
WDBWK56F56F108731
Please confirm i am in the "danger zone" so i dont do anythign crazy with a warranty.
272963 30 244852
Thanks!
Pretty sure via the Russian site that the engine is in the range for the defective part. Thinking about direct buy warranty as we are right on the edge of the mileage range for the problem and i want the peace of mind for the wife while she is driving it. Not expecting to have anything close to this from a Mercedes, pretty sad how they are not handling this major defect. I am a huge BMW E46 fan and wish i would have bought the ZHP or Z4 instead......wife loves this one though.

2008 ML350
Hello,
I am considering the purchase of a 2008 ML350 4Matic. I asked my local MB dealer if my vehicle was in the effected range, and they keep telling me yet. However, when I compare the engine # to the ones on here, it shows that I am not at risk. Please give advice.
VIN: 4JGBB86E88A350983
Engine # 27296730766279.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is there anything that I should be nervous about? The vehicle has 95k miles.
Thanks!

Well when you drive an MB gasser with 95K hopefully you don't own a house or arnt married because all that money will be used for repairs, but ---I know you want your girlfriend to drive a MB!!

Are there any other known issues that I should be concerned with?

Aren't '08s well out of the range? (just guessing from what I have read)
As for Plutoe, just read for the good info and chuckle at the rest.

My MB dealer must have been mistaken then, as they told me three different times to be concerned with balance shaft on this VIN. I appreciate your input and guidance.
I highly value the opinion of MB gurus like yourselves, and therefore, I must ask one last time. Are there any known issues, other than the balance shaft issue, that I should be concerned with. Can I easily take this car to 150k miles?
