Balance shaft collateral damage

I was wondering... considering that the balance shaft issue is from sprockets cast from bad metal causing them to wear prematurely, don't the cast-off metal filings or particles pose problems in other parts of the engine where they circulate with the oil?

Yes but they will have to pass through the oil inlet screen then the very close tolerance oil pump then into the oil filter assuming there is no oil bypassing then into the engine parts, if you don't consider a oil pump with internal clearances of .001" a engine part.
