Lost power steering

I recently lost power steering boost on my 2003 E500 with 105,000 miles. I had my mechanic replace the power steering pump, and to my surprise---steering is still hard and clunky, it did nothing to help the steering. He tell me its the power steering rack, is there anything else I should have him look at before replacing this, since its not a cheap fix.

Is this mechanic checking for faults with SDS? May I ask what mechanic you are using? PM me if you don't want to make it public.

I'm using a local guy here in my town. I will probably bring in to the dealership to fix this since no one can give me an answer. PS--I don't know what the SDS is? Please elaborate. Thanks!!!

I've been calling the shop in Rockaway, but haven't been able to talk to him personally yet. I plan talk to him before I would go to the dealership, that is my last possible option.

Yeah---believe it or not one mechanic installed a tie rod for the left hand side, when it was for the right hand side. 2 Power steering racks and 2 power steering pumps later the problem was solved. Not to mention, 3 mechanics later and a waste of $4000. This is-- after I mentioned to all mechanics, check that tie rod first, its the only worked done to the car. All issues started after it was installed. Only the last mechanic caught it, when he replaced the power steering rack, after it was replaced once before. Part of the process is to attach the rack to the tie rod. All this for a $25. incorrect tie rod!!
