2003 E 500 - Full option
Mobile Phone ?

My April 2002, E 500 (EU specs) is equiped with a NOKIA 6210 mobile phone delivered by MB.

This mobile is only 2 bands (only usable in Europe).

I need a 3 bands to go to North America.

Does anybody know a solution ?

NOKIA 6310i looks very similar.

Is it compatible ?

Some threas are speaking about a universal adpator. How does it work. Is it available in Europe ?

I have a 6200 (6210 I think) in the US and took it to Italy last month. It is a single band phone and it worked just fine. My service provider in the US is ATT. In Italy, it picked up WIND, TIM and VODAPHONE.

I think the service in the US is called GPRS.

I assume you are just thinking of bringing a phone only and not the whole car. In that case, yes, a 6310i is a three band phone and should work here. Actually, for use in the USA, you need only a single band phone, 1900 mHz, here because the other two bands are not used in the USA. There is a lot of other cheaper phones that you might consider if you are only going to use it for a short time.

GSM service is not as widespread in the USA as in Europe. The biggest GSM supplier is T-mobile (formerly Voicestream) with ATT and a few other having some GSM service. GSM service is available in almost all relatively large city areas but is relative scarce in other parts. The T-mobile "pay-as-you-go" SIMs are much more expensive than similar service in Europe. Most any other pay-as-you-go plan (as opposed to monthly) is expensive here as well but you will get better coverage with some of the non-GSM phones.

If you want some more information, I can probably help. Send me an e-mail.

Your 6200 is a tri-band phone with 850/1800/1900Mhz compatibility so it will work on the new 850Mhz GSM networks here, the current 1900Mhz networks and the 1800Mhz networks worldwide. Why they didn't include the far more common 900Mhz GSM band I don't know but it may curtail your roaming possibilities depending on where you travel.

As to the original poster's question, the 6310i should plug in and work just fine. Unlike here in the US, MBs European phone kits don't require special handsets as I understand it. Thus, any 6310i will do. Why not go to a shop and ask to borrow one to test it? Put your SIM in it and see if it works.

On the UHI (universal handy adapter), it is primarily a European product, not sure if it'll be available here in the US. I also am not sure if it's available yet. The best person to ask would be Steve, otherwise known as MBenzNL here on the boards. Do a search for his name and you can get his Email address from one of his posts.

I took contact with my MB dealership in France.

It exists an adaptation kit for the W 211 from Nokia 6210 to 6310i.

The reference is B67885006.

But it costs 587€ (+- 650 $) which is expensive.

What does it include ? Does it require work to the car ? It is bluetough.

Here are two threads that might be useful to you.

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...m&pagenumber=1
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=19579

Neither is for a 211 but there is information on the 6310i, differences between USA and European installations, GSM service in the USA and other things that might help.

In my case, I decided that I wanted a newer, more feature packed phone more than I wanted an older phone integrated into the car. So I just use a hand held one but that is strictly a matter of personal perference that only you can decide.

I just got confirmation from Nokia and verified on their website that the 6210 is an EU, Africa and Asia (Dual band 900/1800Mhz non-US GSM )only phone. I was mistaken in thinking I had this model when in fact, I have the 6220 which is compatible in those paces as well as North and South America (Tri band 900/1800/1900Mhz Global GSM). According to ATT (my provider and Cingular, 1900Mhz is what the US uses for GSM and EU uses 900 and 1800Mhz. From what I have found, it appears the 6210 will NOT work in the US. Check the comparison at the link below.

???????????????

My Nokia interface will accept 6310i, 6210, 6110, 6150 and 5110. No adaptor from 6210 to 6310, the interface is the same. Maybe a software problem. Because your E500 was delivered before the 6310i exists in the market. But 587€ if the Nokia interface costed me about 600€ ????.

Borrow a 6310 and test if it works before paying 587 €.
