Smartkey stopped working

My smartkey won't unlock or lock doors, but starting engine works. I did a search for any solutions but found nothing. I changed 2 fresh batteries and see the red led light when pressed but thats all it does.

Do you have another smartkey, and if so, does it work properly? If it does, then the problem isn't on the "car" side and has to be on the remote side.

Your smartkey actually has two different sections. One section is the wireless feature that unlocks the doors, the other "talks" to your ignition system and allows the car to start. It sounds like your remote has failed in the wireless transmitter section.

Update: The smartkey will unlock and lock doors however only if its next to the driver door handle, I can not lock/unlock from a distance. Does anyone know where the antenna for the security system located? Reason I ask is I had my rear window retinted right before this started happening, so I suspect the window tinter may of cut the antenna or something.

Seems this person ran into my problem also but see no solution, post #18. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w211...less-go-2.html

Rear window grid (connected to antenna amplifier module in right c-pillar) receives RF signal from key. Tint can affect reception.

Check the old reliable, push the key under your throat and click the door opener. This should help you from a distance away from the car. If this does not work, change your batteries again...

That works on keyless entry remotes for some makes, like my old Hondas. It does not work with a SmartKey from my experience.

lol that's an old trick. it works though. helped a beautiful lady once find her car (a newer C300) in a parking lot hehe it doesn't work for the windows though since that works through IR not RF

hmmm, i had a problem on my remote where the trunk button wouldn't work unless i was really close and tried numerous times to hold it down. my indy shop changed the shell for me (he had a used one laying around) and it solved it. don't know if urs is the same issue.

Need help on rear defroster grid

Ok I bought a defroster repair kit and need help from you fellow owners, can someone please compare your car's grid line to mine and confirm that indeed the breaks are the true breaks. Attached is a picture looking out from the back seat and top center of window you can see the lines that are broken or at least I think they are broken. Please someone compare their grid to mine and let me know.

I believe the 3 gaps in the top line are actually breaks. The second row at the 90 degree turn down is not a break. IIRC that is normal and is an antenna grid line.

Thanks OTTO, I bridged the broken lines with defroster repair however it did not fix my remote unlock/lock problem. Looks like I have to go to the dealer and bend over to their prices if I want it fixed.

Sorry it didn't fix your Smartkey issue.

There is another possibility for diagnosis. If you have an Autozone where you live, some of them have a remote tester that you can use for free. It's just a radio receiver tuned to the remote frequency that lights up if your remote is sending a signal. If you don't have an Autozone, or they don't have a tester, you can buy one for around $20.00.

here's a link for one:

It might be worth the expense vs the dealership service department. If the remote is bad, you're still going to out a chunk of change for a new remote, but you won't have to pay the diagnosis fee. I would imagine the dealership diag fee will be more than $20.00.
