Intermittant wipers...are "intermittant"

My '09 E 350's wipers are a bit eratic. When I turn them on to the initial setting, "slow intermittant wiping", for light rain conditions they seem to operate correctly for 10 minutes or so, meaning the rain sensor operation seems to space the sweeps appropriately. But then they'll speed up to the point of nearly high speed, continuous operation, and will continue at that pace until the light rain completely subsides or I turn them off...and revert to activating the "single wipe" feature occasionally via the stalk push button.

Could the rain sensor be going bad? Where is it located...in the windshield behind the inside mirror?

(Sometimes I think too such technology is more trouble than its worth.)

Comments?

Mine does the same thing.. annoying there isn't a manual intermittent choice, instead of the rain sensor setting.
